Auro:

Sorry to hear...took some guts to autopsy you chick......CCLs are a great breed...don't give up on them....there are a few of us: DH, Sally Sunshine, and me (should have a quad working in the spring)....that can supply you with replacements...

It's not too bad if you know they're going to a good home. It I always want pics to see that they are okay. :p

Last night at a housewarming party, I was chatting with a woman who has chickens. When I met her two years ago, she had a few and j didn't have any yet. She now only has one (predators), and was so concerned about how her chicken was going to make it through the winter by herself. Of course I told her I'd give her hen a new home. (Her husband wants to take a break from chickens for a while. :duc ). So perhaps this week or so I will have another BR to add to my flock. Maybe I won't have to buy more eggs in the grocery store that way... :oops:

I would say that the fluid was ascites, probably an infected umbilical cord that finally overtook her system. I am on my phone so I can't confirm but Google 'ascites' and see if it doesn't show up with infections also...I know it does show up with congestive heart failure and liver diseases...

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. I just don't understand. I'm doing everything the same as I've always done and I've never lost chicks like this before.
 
I just checked when I posted about Penelope being egg bound. It's been 4 WEEKS ago! Poor baby. She has not lost her spunk. She was fighting, she picked the fight, with the roosters in the next run through the fence. She is still hanging in there.

This is a crazy question. Could the egg incubate in her body? All the posts I have seen about an egg bound hen die within 48 hours if the egg hasn't come out. It has been 4 WEEKS.
