Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I started working on building my breeding pens yesterday too. I think I finally got my husband talked into leaving the turkeys in the shed and letting me build these pens. There's going to be 4 of them, all under a pavilion type roof with the individual coops built into the side of it. Each coop will be 4' x 5' with a 8' x 5' run

they'll be able to get up above the coops too. I'll probably put roosts there or something eventually. I need to finish getting the footers on the ground before the ground freezes though

That's exciting. We can expect lots of fancy chicks from you next year.

Central PA really need some good breeders. It's really hard to find any chicks other than those farm production chickens or barnyard mix. They are still cute, but it would be nice to get some fancy breeds in our backyard.

In the mean time, my "handy" husband is having a hard time to put our coop together. He keeps change the design to make it easier. I hope it will not eventually become a piece of junk.

So does anyone else have a coop that looks like a sorority pillow fight scene?? jeez, our girls should be naked if you went by the looks of all the feathers on the floor right now!
My coop looks like that....than again judging by the amount of dog hair that's around the house as well our dog should be naked.

I don't ever dig into the ground, other than to just level it, if needed. Digging holes for posts and footers is just too much work. My main coop is really a very large portable structure that is nailed to a building to make one side.

Also, I never make it possible for the birds to roost on the roof of the coop, the roosts inside should be the highest point they can reach, otherwise, some of them will decide to stay outside in the rain and snow. Even with all that, I still have trouble with the bigger birds (turkeys and peas). All outdoor roosts are removed for winter and still I had a tom that insisted on sleeping outside on the ground last winter. It nearly killed him (and probably did, he was never right after that and passed over the summer). I frustrates me when they won't avail themselves of the accomodations I make for them.

So far, only one my girls has officially molted this year, except for broody molts. The chicken I got from a friend has so many bare spots with new quills coming in. She is having a hard molt, but I'm glad it's still fairly warm around here.

Do most chickens molt every year?

I get emails forms Dressbarn, and they are doing a creative ad campaign. Here are the photos. Any guess on the chicken breed?

I think I on my own with this one. Hubby may have agreed to it but he has no time, energy, or desire to work on it. That's OK though. Same thing happened with our main coop and I got lots of practice using power tools lol.

In other news, we got the garden tilled in today and the garlic planted. Now I'm taking a breather and watching the turkeys chase Rosco around. He was chasing a hen down and she was smart enough to run through the turkeys who didn't approve of it lol. I let them out top free range topiary. I know I'm trying to fatten them up asks gain weight for thanksgiving but I feel too bad keeping them penned up so much.

Cupid is being a butthead and following Able all over the place, challenging him. Able is just ignoring him completely lol

The girls have no time for that silliness. They need a dust bath!

And the chickens have invaded the turkey coop to clean up any spilled food in there. You know it tastes so much better than their own!

I don't know how some of you get things done alone in the coop! I think having a toddler is the way to go! She collects eggs, and I rake the bedding and fill food and water. Her compact size makes moving around easier too. Egg on the floor? She can get to it s lot easier than me!
