Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Speaking of heated bowls, I just bought one today for the turkey coop for the winter. They're $19.99 at TSC right now. This will be my first time using one. I'm so going to use the submersible heater in the chicken's water dish. I'll be putting plastic on their run today, changing the bedding in the turkey coop and moving Adam out there (and bringing the other 2 boys in to be seperated for processing). Hopefully it doesn't take all evening to do everything lol

I am a happy lady this evening... we sold my favorite young rooster from the summer hatches so he will get to spend his years with a few good hens and we won't have to butcher him!!!

A lady who bought three of our pullets a few days ago called me out of the blue today to see if I still had him, she had said before she only wanted hens but had reconsidered after seeing him the day she got her pullets. She picked him up this evening.

It feels so great when you can sell the good ones

And the lady was nice enough to agree to us getting some eggs back from her in the spring to give to broodies, this guys great size and temperament over the easy going silver pencils rock hens should make for some great egger hens...

If I ran into a bear in the middle of the woods, I can assure you I would become Bruce Jenner (well the old one, not the "new" one) and I don't know if we would resolve whether a bear poops in the woods if nobody is there to see it, but I would! Oh and there would be lots and lots of screaming!

Baym:

Running from a bear is not recommended...they can run faster than a horse and climb way better than humans(and running encourages chasing)...screaming may help, though...

and Auro, a .223 is a great load..(I shoot a .243)...but you need a bigger bullet to penetrate a bear....you'd piss them off for sure and most likely encourage an attack.....my two cents...

I have a question: are all the green egg layers having blue and brown egg genes? There is a PURE breed Green-egg-layer chicken (Yes, that's their Chinese name.) that exists thousands of years and all of them lay green eggs. If they have both blue and brown egg genes, then at least 25% of them should lay brown eggs, right? Here is how they look like:

(Their eggs are the very uniform green color. If you scroll down see the pile of brown-green eggs, that's from British EEs for comparison.)

By the way, does any one know if I can find those chickens in USA? It would be fun to have one.

Tilly, I can't read the web site...are they relate to the Indonesian chicken that is all black? seems from the pics...(there is a similar Swedish breed derived from the Indonesian breed) Green eggs are nice...I have one green egg layer...a CCL/BC Marans mix crossed back to a CCL boy...

Well, we do have the shotgun... but I've never shot that one lol. I've just been keeping an eye out when I'm outside. Most of our stuff is close to the house. I was a bit nervous wandering out to the compost pile but with all the leaves down, I could see pretty far. I knew bears were tough but I didn't realize they were THAT though. I've seen the damage a 9mm and a .223 can do and they'd just keep on coming....that's crazy.
