I am a happy lady this evening... we sold my favorite young rooster from the summer hatches so he will get to spend his years with a few good hens and we won't have to butcher him!!!

A lady who bought three of our pullets a few days ago called me out of the blue today to see if I still had him, she had said before she only wanted hens but had reconsidered after seeing him the day she got her pullets. She picked him up this evening.

It feels so great when you can sell the good ones

And the lady was nice enough to agree to us getting some eggs back from her in the spring to give to broodies, this guys great size and temperament over the easy going silver pencils rock hens should make for some great egger hens...

always nice when a good one gets 'drafted'....I have a couple of chooks that I shouldn't be 'keeping', but, they've got a kitchen pass cause I like them......

Well folks:

Lost another girl today...(a Colombian Wyandotte) she and her sister were bought to be chick friends with a single CCL hatch a few months ago...she was very close to POL.....she just started getting lethargic...I tried a couple of batches of scrambled eggs and extra scratch to keep her eating but she just couldn't turn it around...tried electrolytes this morning and pulled her into the 'hospital'....didn't work....have seen this before....maybe just bad genes.....

so sorry you lost her :(

@dheltzel when you use the heated dog bowls during the winter do you have any problems with frostbite on waddles?
I used mine last year with no problems.
I'm in Lancaster County, New Holland area. Looking to add a turkey or 2 to my flock. Any for sale?
Welcome!

So sorry. That always stinks. Didn't you have a Roo that passed recently? Maybe you should have a necropsy done?

Good morning all I'm sitting here with my coffee waiting for the sun to come up. These short days are already making me crazy. I want to go out and get the chickens up and moving but they get mad at me if I get them up before the sun comes up lol. So i guess I'll just sit here and drink my coffee.

I'm heading out under cover of darkness to catch some chicks I want to sort through later. They are much easier to catch when they can't see you coming. I guess they will be mad at me either way, but if I wait until it is light they try to make a run for it. Some of them will be allowed to do just that, but I want to pick the ones that are allowed to free range. It's funny, they all want out, but they ones I let out will spend the next few days trying to get back in. Then they will form a little gang and go off to make their way on the farm.

He's gorgeous! Love chicken stories with good endings.

I hear ya, I try to time my chores with the sunrise, otherwise the sunlight is way more than my eyes can tolerate. Then I need a hat, dark glasses...I know it's time to move my brooders into the basement for repair and painting for next season, I just haven't been able to muster the energy to do so.

Yep, I have been lucky enough to have 3 good ones get new homes this year!

So sorry to hear about another one, I have seen similar also, one pullet or so a year it seems. Hopefully she wasn't caused by the same thing that got your roo, though, with the two going so close together.

I used mine last year with no problems.

Thanks, he is actually one of the barnyard mixes, most likely a light sussex roo over a jersey giant hen based on leg color and body size, he was only around 22-24 weeks and around 8 lbs...he's going to be an impressive fellow when he hits maturity!

Thanks, it made my day! as much as I recognize the reality of raising birds means you need to be ready to take responsibility of extra roosters, I still hate butchering off good birds when I know they would be great flock birds.

Okay, I have a serious problem! I already have ducklings hatched out in my head from ducks I don't even own yet! I plan on participating in the New Years hatch-a-long. I don't think I'll make it that long! Someone stop me!
Oh, wait! Look who I'm asking for help! You guys can't put away your incubators for a week! I'm doomed! I'd better plan on making a pond. Ohhhhhh man!!
