That is so cool!  I think I would be luring them into a pen for 'safe keeping' LOL

Agreed!

Been a strange day, highs and lows to say the least...hawk attack, but no great injury, then a nice visit with a nice couple who bought some birds from us...
But then a phone call about a member of DH's family, his nephew suffered a massive MI and passed away. His father (DH'S oldest brother) just passed away in June from the same. It is going to be a rough holiday for the family.

So sorry for your loss. It will be a hard year for us too. :hugs

Schnecksville PA here!

Welcome from Bucks County.

Fisherlady, I'm so sorry for your loss. I could not imagine losing someone so suddenly like that, and especially right before the holidays.

Schnecksville PA here!

My old stomping grounds! I grew up in Neffs and Orefield. My sister just bought a house in Schnecksville North and the rest of my big family is scattered all over the LV. Hubs and I got relocated out near Pittsburgh a few years back but we make pretty frequent trips back east... Sometimes serving as a chicken train to help animals get to new homes across the state. I took a trip back at Halloween and spent the first night at my sister's and her hubs was so worried they'd get in trouble if a neighbor found out they had several pullets and a rooster spending the night too! Lol

We are more on the border line of schnecksville and new tripoli. The only person round here that does not enjoy my ladies is the UPS driver because i wont let him down the driveway because i fear he wont pay attention since they are free range. I have my duck crossing signs in the driveway but he never pays attention and we had one close call to many lol

Our BCM's are sneaky. Today I cleaned their pen and found 12 eggs. Since there were only 2 visible and I have only 4 hens, you know they've been burying them in the litter for a while. We can't sell them for eating, so I suppose I might as well try to hatch them.

4 more Reese Legbars hatched today, at least one pullet. That brings the total hatched to 16 from 24 eggs. There are 24 more eggs incubating, and more going in tonight. I am firing up the big incubator since I have too many eggs now to get them all into the smaller ones, especially with those BCM eggs.

Haha, firing up the big incubator? Have you taken a break at all yet? Only a few months until spring ya know...

I had all the incubators turned off for about 2 weeks, but the Reese Legbars started laying about the time I turned off the incubators, so I started up just the small one (Genesis, only holds 42 eggs in the turner). Then I bought a Brinsea as a loaner and "had" to test it, so it's been incubating turkey eggs for the last 3 weeks. Last night I turned on the Sportsman and set about 40 new eggs, so I figured I should turn off the other 2 and consolidate all the eggs in to that. There are "only" about 90 eggs in there in total, so I'm still showing a lot of restraint. But if anyone is looking for chicks or poults, let me know, I'm about to be overrun.

I really want to keep the first 5 Reese Legbars I hatched, they are all pullets and have all the best qualities I am looking for in the chicks, easily sexable and very distinctive crests even at 3 weeks of age. But I have more hatching and will be selling most of the rest.

I am going to start hatching in earnest at the beginning of January. There is a lot of interest already, with people willing to keep chicks indoors in Feb and March, or setup a heated area in their coop. I don't believe there is a bad time to get chicks started, but earlier in spring is perfect because they will start laying in the summer with the long days and be in full production over next winter.

This is the first year in quite some time that I don't have chicks in the basement. Normally, chicks in the basement now make for nice show birds in late summer - perfect for the 4-H Round Up.
