The vaseline on the roosting bar ay be a bit of a slipping hazard, you could probably rub the roost bar with a rag soaked in kerosene instead, it would soak into the pores of the wood but still allow some traction
I'd be concerned that the kerosene fumes would bother the roosting birds. How about a spray of Permethrin and/or a dusting with DE?

I would just replace the roosting bar. Definately no kerosene--but you can scrub it in 1:10 bleach in water and if it fits--bake it in your oven at 200 degrees--that will kill any germs and creepy crawlies~

And this week's hatch of Welbars (5 pullets and 8 cockerels, can you sex them by the headspots and general color?)
Congratulations! Even a newbie like me can easily tell by the triangle on the head, chipmunk pattern, and color! Headspots seem not very clear, because the darkest two pullets seem have little white color on top of their heads.

Any bielefielder or sexlink this week? I really hope they'll pick up.

3 of 6 Bielefelder eggs hatched, all cockerels

No Sexlinks yet, but I set 60 eggs to see how fertile they are now. If fertility is still low, I'm gonna have to switch out some roos, that will just make housing the "retirees" difficult.

I have a path in the garden made of flagstone. And concrete steps. They were icy today. I want to put ice melt stuff down so I don't kill myself. Is that safe for the flock? Or should I just get a bag of sand?

Edit - I see there's pet safe versions for sale. This is just the standard ice melt that I already have. What do you guys use?
