Nope ain't gonna do it.
Hey guys! It's been awhile since I've been on, I hope everyone is doing OK this winter so far. Since it's snowing outside and I'm thinking about spring- I'm curious as to what breeds any of you raise for a meat bird? I'm looking for as more hardy bird, low mortality rates, and one who's not going to break is legs trying to walk around. I don't mind a slower growing bird, my husband is convinced on jersey giants but I'm reading mixed opinions about them. Thanks guys, hope everyone is staying warm!
He is so gorgeous! But...overweighted?
Myers offers some slow growing cornish cross and colored rangers. I heard that their birds are much hardy, but I don't have any personal experience. The red rangers are decent, they are a hybrid. For heritage types look at non-hatchery sourced dorkings, favorelles, delawares, white rock and cornish. Good stock is not easy to find though...
Edit to add, not all cornish cross are problems, some hatcheries do produce a slower growing strain and careful management can reduce problems on even fast growing strains.
Lol, he looks like a cotton ball!
