I need some advice on hardware cloth, what size should I get it am thinking 48" high but do I get 1/2 or 1/4" holes

It would help to know the purpose, but generally 1/2" is better. I use 1/4" for the front of my open air (Woods style) coop. Also for hatch baskets in the incubators. Otherwise 1/2" is my choice.

thank you all for the advice I guess it would have been helpful for u guys to know, what I was using it for, it will be used for my main coop run. For now, eventually I will be adding on and going higher than 4 feet. But for now that is,what I can get for the main run.

or maybe this?...

Go higher than 4 feet, unless you are able to keep up with wing clipping. My Rhode Island White hopped my 4 foot fence (for the second time) 1 week after she started laying. My husband says we would have to put in taller posts to re-do the fence too--and post hole digging isn't my favorite thing. Wish I had done it better the first time, but everyone else is saying inside 4 feet.

Definitely 1/2 inch then. And as mentioned, you will get a much better deal online. I've bought from Ebay, Amazon and Walmart.com, whoever has the best price at the time. They all have a vendor named Zoho that sells HW cloth cheap. Delivery is surpisingly fast too.

Or put a roof on the run. Even then 4 ft is not ideal unless you are short, because walking inside a covered 4 ft run is not so fun.

I have heard of people adding a light wire like chicken wire or deer netting to the top of a too-short fence. The supports can be lighter (pipes or conduit maybe?) and the unsteadiness of the top, swaying badly if a chicken tries to fly up to perch on the top, makes them less likely to try. Most chickens will fly up to perch on the top of the fence before flying down on the other side.

BTW, it was nice meeting you and your family last night.

Thank, you also for the advice my plan, right now is,to put the mesh across the top also the run will be 8 feet long I plan on hinging the top for easier access. That is design 1 design 2 is make it 6 feet tall and throw bird needing over the top, but not sure design two will keep the predators out.
