Newbie question. I recently lost one of my BO girls yesterday. I'm not exactly sure from what. She laid an egg for me yesterday morning and was snacking in the after noon. I went to go check on my girls before leaving for work last night, and I found her dead in the run, with her head tucked under her wing as if she were sleeping right before she died. Hubby says we should disgaurd all of yesterdays and the day before eggs as a precautionary measure. It is my understanding of she were sick should would not lay. They only reason I think she laid an egg yesterday, is bc I found four eggs and only have four laying hens. So should I disgaurd eggs? And what could she have died of? No mucus or anything noticed around nose or eyes. I did hear her sneeze a few times but assumed it was from DE dust I mix in dust baths. Should I be worried about the rest of my flock.? I have my 9 week old sillies in the same coop with my BO. Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Hi! Sorry to welcome you and such bad circumstances. :hugs
I think that she simply died of a heart attack. Sometimes it just happens.
Please stick around the thread, and get to know us and vice versa.

Chick number five does seem okay today. The foot has lost its swelling, and it no longer looks like it has an extra toe. I'm not so sure about the wry neck, but if that's the only problem I will do something about it.
It's foot wasn't curled, it just was flattened!

Glad it's looking better...a bit of chick saver or nutridrench in the water may be enough to give it a boost. We have mixed 1/4 cup each of water and apple juice, added a couple drops of nutridrench and a tbsp of brown sugar to make our own version of an energy drink for weak chicks, a few drops an hour for the first 4 hours, then decrease frequency to every 2 hours or so, then every 4 hours. Keep regular water available to them, they will start using it when they see their siblings at it and they have the energy to follow.

No, no mixes. Ducks are expected in three days... Or so!
I'm probably going to set more Pekin eggs. I will collect the neighbors' chocolate eggs from my coop, and set them I think. It seems to be a bantam that lays medium-ish eggs.

I've had great luck treating wry neck with selenium and vitamin E. It seems to work miracles.

Here are a few more pics of my new Welshy babies ;)

Here they are meeting the 7 week old Khakis.

I tried a few minutes in the yard (standing protectively close by) letting the babies out with the Khakis. Hahaha I could have seriously been roflmao. The Welshies just wanted to be with the Khakis and so they followed them, but the Khakis were running from the little Welshies. Now I'm not sure if I have Khakis or just really funny looking chickens hahahaha
