Hi there, I'm new and checked through 8 pages and didn't see anybody from Cambria, where Johnstown is... Does anyone here live around there know if we're allowed chickens? I can't find information on ordinances anywhere for us, and I figured I'd ask before I call some city official?

I have a pretty nice-sized backyard, but I'm only really looking to have maybe 2-3 chickens. I was reading you can actually house train and have house chickens too, with a temporary outdoor coop they can play in during the day. Anyone here who does that? .o

You'll be wanting a lot more than 2 or 3. Build a bigger coop now. I started out wanting 3-4 in suburbia. I have 8, and we're moving soon and I already have plans to fill my coop. Welcome!

my bourbon red hen layed her first 2 eggs yesterday and today :woot

Congrats!,

Piggy:

For my two cents, its much more important to communicate with your direct neighbors....if they are ok with chicks, then things will go smoother....most towns have regs that allow a few pets....I'd suggest getting x4 to 6 to start..chickens are flock animals singles is not good for the bird....you will encounter attrition (predators, illnesses, genetic defects, Roos) to your original purchase and you want to make sure there is at least 3 and it may take months to really know whats going on...hope this helps

Welcome Piggy!
I inquired to my local township office to find out any zoning or ordinances that pertained to me being allowed to keep chickens. Ask to see any "rules" in writing. You would be amazed at how many "opinions" you will get. Some smaller townships do not have full time staffing, so it might take some persistence to get an answer. Good luck!

Hi,
Thanks for thinking of me, stake!

Yeah, it was named after Lord Ligonier, before the Revolution. The Fort in town is from the French and Indian War era. (reconstructed from 1961 to circa 2009) Lord Ligonier never visited the town. We have wonderful tourist reasons to come here. The Fort , it's truly fabulous art and history collection. Joe's Bar with his world class taxidermy exhibit. The Southern Alleghenies Museum of the Arts. And of course the (May to Sept. ) Saturday Farmer's Market. Plus the Compass Inn in next door Laughlintown . And rated the World's Best Children's Amusement Park and 3rd oldest in the US, Idlewild Park and Soakzone. And Idlewild is opening a new Castle attraction this year with Princess Lily.
Then the 2nd week in Oct. the town has their 3 day Fort Ligonier Days. Usually 75 to 100K folk come to our little 2000 person town for a great Arts and Crafts festival, parade, visit the Fort and re-enactors. It's a blast. The Ligonier Valley is called Pennsylvania's Mountain Playground. Oh, I forgot, I live in unincorporated Waterford outside of town. Every summer we have a great 3 day Laurel Highlands Bluegrass festival ( website)one block from our house. And also the Waterford Fireman's carnival with the great juried Firetruck show and parade. It passes by our front lawn. Firetrucks come from far away to participate.
Best,
Karen

Trying to play catch up tonight... I don't seem to get much computer time these days. I knew there was a reason I recognized Ligonier... Idlewild! We haven't been there, but I know it is a popular place for my Pittsburgh mom friends. We have only gone as far as Kennywood.... Idlewild is a full 2 hours from us over here in Beaver County.

I DO have a pair of older Black Australorp hens that I plan to 'retire' at the end of this summer because I'll have a bunch of new girls coming into lay around summer's end. I will be taking my daughter to 4-H camp in Mount Pleasant on June 12 and picking her up June 15 if you'd want to meet one of those days.

Also, if anyone else around the Beaver County area has any birds for you, I'd be happy to bring them along too.
