Hi All. What would you guys do? I have this beautiful Welsummer/silver laced Wyandotte cockerel. I bought three and ended up with him and two pullets. He is well behaved in the pen. Doesn't try to attack and I can touch him if the mood strikes. But I have two Ameracauna cockerels growing out and for sale. I don't really plan on hatching eggs. Is it better to keep my well behaved boy or take a chance on one of the Ameracaunas just in case I want to sell EE?

well, that does look so very inviting, beautiful pics!..and I am not much of a water person, although I have been known to fall in a few trout streams...I bet you could use a few days more, how about a month ..or two?!;)

I HAVE got to get a pressure canner!!!!:barnie ....seeing this just shoves that point in my face, would be so very awesome for veggies , soup, and broth!!!

If you don't have a pressure canner you can can most things like that in boiling water for 3hrs instead. That's the method I've used. Learned from my mom and grandma.

So I had hoped that the new layers would just follow the old layers back into the coop tonight but no dice. They just looked lost and confused. Then they started flying up to the top of the run door to roost... it is 6 1/2 feet up! I finally got them all in once it started getting dark and they stopped running away from me. I sure hope they learn to stay in the run/go in the coop tomorrow because we are leaving for a trip home on Friday and I don't want to make the neighbor deal with that or risk losing more birds because they keep trying to get back to their old pen. I have the run door closed now, but I worry about the old and new birds getting after eachother if I try to lock them all in for a day or two.

Add roosting areas in the run for them to get up on during the day....I have used tree limbs shoved through the chain link in corners or just construction saw horses. Having spaces to 'escape to' can help ease tensions and conflicts between flock members. They can 'hang out' without being in the faces of the more dominant flock members.

Sorry to hear, even though we all know having a flock means loosing birds sometimes it still stings!

Keep in mind that some breeds are broody prone, if you are ok with more broodies it doesn't matter, if you are restricted on space or flock needs then you may want to aim for breeds with less brooding tendancies. If getting eggs from a breeder they should be able to advise you on their birds tendancies.
Are you wanting the feather colors or egg colors in particular?

As MotorcycleChick said, many, many uses for the canned chicken, and since it is already cooked it can be carried for snacking on hikes, picnics or other outdoor activities (we take it out on the boat for lunches) and it chunks and shreds easily for stir fry or tacos or salads. The flavor is great (especially if you mix light and dark meats like we do). And it keeps for ages without using freezer space.
