I have a feeling it has to do with people just randomly breeding whatever they get their hands on. I don't know where you got her, but if she was in a pen of someone that was concerned to sell eggs or offspring only for profit or because they seemed to be popular and easy money, she might be from a hen that only laid 1 or 2 eggs a month.I just read that Marans need more protein than other birds. Could this be why Cate only lays 4 eggs a month at the most?
really nice with the barring I bet! Are yellow legs a "standard"?....i need to read more...first have to find the time.I took some pics of the roos, but need to get them off the camera to upload. This is an old pic of a silver pullet, she is not barred, so not technically a silver welbar, but her barred sister (who I never got a pic of) is the mother of my current silver cocks. The silver cocks (including the chick Auroradream26 has now) are only heterozygous for silver. That is ok with me because I can use them over any Welbar pullet to get both silver and gold chicks. The little one that Auroradream26 lost should have looked something like this one (but barred). None of my silver chicks are old enough yet to show their adult plumage.

I'm really disappointed that it was the silver pullet that I lost but I guess that's just the way it is. It'll be great to see the little silver guy grow up though. Daffodil is doing great and keeping tabs on the last two. I just watch her spend 5 minutes teaching them how to get back in to the run. She got one in, the other was confused and she had to go back for him but she got them both where she wanted them. Those two seem to stay very close to her. They'll be a week old tonight? Ana is doing great with her baby too. Both girls are civil towards each other and while they're not working together, they can be together without any issues. That's a relief!
The entire house smells like garlic right now. I won't have to worry about any vampires coming around here lol. I finally managed to get the rest of our harvest peeled, sliced, and in the dehydrator to make garlic powder. We filled 4, half gallon jars of pickled cloves to use throughout the year too. I think my fingers may perminantly smell like garlic now lol.
yes....our dogwood is really dropping them. I am acting like I don't notice...Has anyone noticed how many leaves are falling already?
what did you promise them so they would stand like that?

The brown ones in the first pic is my EE Roos daughters he has three, then I have a pure bred Rhode Island Red, and a girl that's sorta a mystery but she is mixed with quite a bit. Then I have the red sexlinks and the silkies but as you can see they arnt fully grown yet and my little roo of the silkies he just started crowing. And the one I mean is a mystery and is mixed with a lot of breeds, she is the one missing a lot of her feathers because she is e roosters favorite. And there are a few off camera
wow...what do you feed them?...regular layer?..and lots of garden stuff?...4 eggs a month?! Those numbers would have her in the "danger zone" here...I just read that Marans need more protein than other birds. Could this be why Cate only lays 4 eggs a month at the most?
My Welsummer X pullets have been acting strange. When I throw out food and meal worms they come running but then just kind of stand there. Everyone else is voracious in their hunting down the worms. They are the last to lay...someone has been laying yolks with no shell or soft already smushed eggs. Could their personality change be due to egg laying pr
hope the rest will pull a last minute surprise for you!Good evening all:
Well my last hatch is standing at Two Olive eggers and a CCL.....x4 eggs still in the game but no pips.....tic toc
Awesome pics! Love the idea of using the failed branch to make a "tree house". Looks like they will be climbing over it in no time. Your little bug is adorable too.I had some weird egg issues today...nothing bad, just odd...surprises.poor photo, sorry...half of this egg is speckled with the drk coloring, the other half is cream colored. I believe this is from the marans KFC...(hatched from MC egg)
the egg in the middle is a "new" one...i do not recognize it..so i am thinking one of the rock girls decided to surprise me.....it is smaller than any of the usual & it is very light colored, looks almost whit compared to the others...I do not believe you can see it in this photo..but in person it looks like it has been coated with calcium...know what I mean?? The rock girls have been eating egg shells like they were going extinct...IDK
..it has a serious pucker-taper huh?...ahahaha I looked the young ones over today, couldn't tell much from that. One vent looks a little more moist than the other...their wattles/combs are not as red as I would have thought they'd be.... Guess time will tell on this...
A very large branch from a neighbors tree broke into our yard last storm we had. I thought the girls would be a little more entertained with something to "play" on/in ...so, DH made them this. 99% of it is made from the lrg. branch, 2 pieces of pallet wood were added for stability. I threw some apple pieces and tomatoes in there to get the "over" it being a new scary thing in the run...didn't take much did it?!

[/COLOR] caught in the act....hahaha.... Thank you for allowing me to totally flood the thread.
I would be most interested in knowing how you make your garlic powder. I am doing a bit more in the little dehydrator I have. It has it's limits...have to stick closer to just small batches of tomatoes, it can handle herbs fine..., but it is just a small thing.
Will maybe be the next investment item.
Dh just bought me a pressure canner last night @ 1am..haha, don't ask...anyway, will pick it up next wednesday. I am already tired of waiting.e ....
