Do a search for pot roast in a pressure cooker...I put a bit of olive oil in the cooker, heat it and braize a large roast I already poked holes into (put some minced garlic in each hole, about 1/2 clove per hole x8) and rubbed with just a little Montreal Steak seasoning or similar favorite rub. Pull the roast back out and place it on a plate for a moment....put the little separater plate in the bottom of the cooker and add 4 cups of water.
Mince a cup each worth of celery, onion and carrot and add it and the roast into the cooker, put the lid on and bring it to a 15lb rattle. Once it rattles let it rattle for 30 minutes and then turn off the heat and let the pressure reduce slowly, after it is below about 5 you can open it up and add 2 cups of baby carrots, 2 medium sweet onions cut in large chunks, 6 red potatoes cut in quarters or 6ths (depending on size) and a cup of sliced celery. Replace lid and bring back to 15lb pressure, cook at rattle for 5 minutes and then remove from heat and let the pressure reduce slowly until lid can come off.
Remove roast and slice, scoop the potatoes, onion and carrots into a dish as a side and enjoy!

The pressure cooker isn't just for canning!

And save that broth! After doing a roast I get 6 broth bones from the butcher shop, place them in the pressure cooker with about 10-12 cups of water and pressure cook the at 15lb for 1.5 hours for bone broth... combine this with the roast stock for some awesome beef broth for soup or you can can the broth for later use. My DH and step son love it when I do these broth runs, since I use the beef broth as part of my French Onion Soup recipe...

GRAPHIC PHOTOS BELOW Disaster struck today. Two of my welbar pullets managed to get into the turkey pen. I found the gap under the fence and fixed it but this is getting old. Both girls are ok at the moment. They must've been running from the turkeys and got themselves wedged between a tree and the chicken wire. The turkeys couldn't get them there but they were pinned and the rest of the chicken flock must've started picking at them. The one was lucky and only has the tip of her one wing chewed up. Not too bad either. THIS one though, I thought she was dead when I found her. She must've wiggled her head through the chicken wire, trying to get out, which made it a target. She was dripping blood all down her face when I found her and was limp, like she'd given up completely. I even saw her get pecked and she didn't even move. I didn't get a picture of her before I treated her but it was horrific. Her skin is completely ripped from the top of her head, the whole way down the back of her neck and the muscle was even missing a couple chunks. She was picked completely bald and the skin on the right side of her head was pulled forward towards her face, exposing her ear and part of her eye. I cleaned her up the best I could and made some makeshift stitches with a needle and heavy thread. It took 6 of them to pull the skin together down the back of her neck. Her left eye is still good and she'll open it and look around but she's sleeping a lot and not moving much. I know she can though because I took her outside to bluekote her head and an escaped turkey came over to see what was up. She went into a panic trying to escape. Her right eye concerns me. Though it doesn't look like there's any damage to the eye itself, The muscles to open and close her eyelid are most likely torn and ruined. Right now, her eyelid on that side looks stretched back a little since I had to pull her skin back some to connect it with the stitches. I'm using an eyedropper to slowly give her vitamin water. Everyone, please wish me luck with her recovery. She's going to need it. The first 5 pictures were right after I cleaned her up and stitched her together. The last couple were a couple hours later, after some bluekote and rest.

You did good getting her fixed up! Their ability to recover is amazing, so hopefully she will do well. You may want to check to see if their is an antibiotic cream safe to use on/around her eye to help the tissues their recover, and maybe something to help keep the eye itself moist? I have placed generic triple antibiotic right around an eye before without (known) ill effects, but there may be a product better suited for eye injury care.

I have terramycin. I believe that's good for eyes. I may have to put some in. I just feel bad. I can't really handle her head at all for fear of hurting her more. I'll just have to do it very carefully. Right now what I'm most concerned about is infection. I cleaned her up with warm water with some peroxide mixed in and cotton balls and I sterilized the needle and thread with alcohol then blue kote everything but I don't know if that's going to be enough. I'm not sure how many other chickens pecked at her and put germs and bacteria in it. I guess we'll see what happens. Thank you for the encouragement.

i do shop all those places..but, up here anyway..the good will has it's prices a bit too high per jar to do it that way.
Dollar store and Family dollar are were I had gotten them from..then walmart had their "main stay" line, they got rid of those, only carry the reg lids/ rings...
Now they have "anchor"..they are the cheapest so far...on all size of jars w/lid/ring combo.
will keep looking for good deals wherever can find them.

You are doing great! I have had hens with their sides torn open into their abdominal cavity from rooster claws and warm water, soap and triple antibiotic got them through, so you should be good.
There is a spray called Poultry Aid which we have used with good results on abrasions and surface wounds such as the pecking type, it is easy to apply since it is a spray, but it can't be gotten in the eyes, so it would work on the back of her head and neck. TSC carries it.

For cleaning I get a 20 or 30cc syringe with no needle, mix a bowl of warm water with preferred smild soap or cleansing product and suck it up into the syringe to flush the area you want to clean...it is much easier to control flow and the bird than trying to use a sink faucet or sprayer to do it. Syringes,Cotton balls, q-tips and old towels to wrap the birds in when working on them are basic necessities in our first aid kit.

there are specific eye wound care bandages (for humans), that may be used. They do help keep the effected areas moist for proper healing, some even have antibiotic right in them. I believe a lot of "field" first aide kits have these in them. I have a few , i will look to see what they have in them..if you want.
You are doing what you need to do, not intentionally hurting her...you are doing a great job. The fact that she is still here is proof enough. She has been through an exceptionally traumatic experience..most likely in whatever type of 'shock' they endure. The more that can be done immediately or as soon as possible the better this will ensure better, faster and more thorough healing..JMO
