I don't give them hay. They just get their feed, scratch at bedtime, and scraps whenever.

Me too! I don't provide supplemental lighting for my girls over the winter. I'd rather have them live healthy long lives and not get burned out early, since I am not financially dependent on their laying. So if they are not laying as regularly as usual, they probably don't need as many vitamins and minerals, I figure. My girls are spoiled!
Quote: I had almost forgotten about the leaves! I'll have plenty this year for sure. We have to invest in a leaf blower though. So much more room to gather them! They do like the leaves when everything else is frozen and hard.

GM all:

This is what a neighbor left in my mailbox....
Aw, how sweet. I suppose for hatching and not eating? I already had a family member telling me i could borrow their incubator. I haven't used an incubator yet, but after having multiple broodies, I don't think it could be easier. She does all the hard work and gets to live out her dreams. I just observe and provide protection.

I have a hen that appears to need a hen saddle, but with my flock of 19 girls and 3 boys turning to 19 girls and 1 boy, do you think she will heal without it? She was the #1 target for both of the boys who are gone.

She will probably stay mostly bare till her next molt, the saddles will protect her from spurs and scratching until feathers grow back.
