I've been looking for a while and I really like the Lakenvelders. I also like the Creme Brabanter. I like the mention of excellent foraging of the Lakenvelders, and they are just stunning.

How did you talk go today? Was there a good turnout? I went to one of those talks the fall before I got my chickens, it was very informative.

My dad was telling me about some German named bird that was for sale at feedmill last week. Based on description I think they were Lakenvelders

Do you know what feedmill it was? After I wrote this, I looked up reviews on this breed and they were less than glowing. They seem to be a flighty breed, so good at free ranging that they almost don't want to come home to roost. Perhaps Sandhills has better stock, or perhaps someone needs to work on their breeding to encourage more human friendly birds.

Lakenvelders are pretty birds, but as you found, can be flightly (like the leghorns I mentioned). Flightly is not always bad, they are far less likely to become dinner for a hawk and might even protect your others birds by their alertness. Individuals can vary, and even flighty breeds calm down a lot when they mature and figure out you are bring good and not harm.

Brabanters are a lot rarer and have the distinctive look that gets attention. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/brabanter

You might also consider some bantams, you can keep a lot more of them in the same space and for the same amount of effort. I know where you can get Lakenvelder and Vorwerk (basically a gold version of a Lakenvelder) bantams. Even if you kept your breeders confined, they would need a fairly small pen to have a good sized breeding group.

Bantam Langshans from @msladyhawke might be a good way to go too. They are rare and you'd have little trouble selling any extras you produce.

Congrats on the shed....imho, you may want to put some support in the middle area as you will be walking around in there yourself.....

also, I am a promoter of linoleum, I got mine at HD and bought the 1'x1' peel and stick the ones I used were about $.50 each...easy to install and if one comes loose you just put another on down....only tool necessary is a razor knife to trim odd pieces....

Your OEs are BCM over CCL.....(BCM playing the role of the milkman).....I think using that match, boys will be barred and girls black...(psudo auto sexing)...in my old match CCL over BCM all chicks were barred.....

Some thoughts on setting up breeds and breeding....well, estimate the size of your flock (humm)....next figure out if you will need separate coops/pens for breeding (think milkman)....then decide where you are at on the rainbow basket...and start to backfill the birds you want....
Lastly, I have been caught short in having after having a predator take my only roo...makes plans for a backup....it can set you back an entire year.....my two cents....

Our turkey "Tasty" who showed up a few months ago is MIA. She was around this morning, and gone now, the kids have been searching everywhere for her and are heartbroken. I pray she comes home!!! Do Turkey's just run away?????? :(
