Sand Hill Preservation Center order for 50 chicks is sealed and ready to go into the mail. Next year I will hopefully be adding these breeds to my flock from Sand Hill:
Welsummers (new strain that I hope is better than my old ones)
Cream Brabanters (@AnneInTheBurbs is getting some of these also)
Tomaru (Long Crowers) - black birds, long tails like Sumatras, but have the ability to make long crows

In addition, I am getting Mahogany Favorolles and Red Dorkings for other people, so hopefully those breeds also get established locally as a result of this order. I am super excited about all these . . .

I spent a lot of time looking st their catalogue and searching google images like you said I would @dheltzel! haha!

The Lakenvelder is a really pretty looking breed.

I'm so excited! I have a completely free weekend to stay home and work on my chicken setup!  On the list for this weekend is

-installing the automatic door opener (and making a door)
- power washing and painting the exterior
- beginning the run.

That should keep me busy!  Looks like we have a beautiful couple days for it too.  What will you all be doing this weekend?

Argh, no rest for the weary this weekend lol.

Tonight, girl scouts are getting together to open a bank account. My son wants to go to the school dance after we're done at the bank. While he's there, my daughter and I have cleaning and halloween treats to make for our guests that are coming over tomorrow evenin.

Tomorrow, gotta finish cleaning up whatever we didn't manage to get done (probably mostly everything. Hang the plastic panels in the screen porch, and make buffalo chicken dip and taco dip. Our company is coming up around 5 or 6 for a boon fire and maybe some card games. I'm sure everyone will be here till late.

Sunday, it's clean up the leftover mess from the party. I seriously doubt we'll be up in time for church. Trick or treat for the kids is from 1-3 then we have to stay for the parade since the girl scouts are marching in it. Then it's come home and get ready to drive to my stop for the chicken train lol. Busy weekend!

Whew! Mom tired just thinking about that...

Southwest Pa. I only have one little Banty hen.

Welcome! She does probably need some friends, but the introduction has to be a little different.

Hi @AnneInTheBurbs
, other than Halloween activities, this is a big weekend for our chickens that we've been building up to for a while. All chickens will go into the same coop in a "look but don't touch" segregation situation. The 4 older ones have the run and coop, with a section separated by chicken wire for the 3 younger ones. There's been a lot to learn since taking on these 3 and brooding/quarantining them. Really glad we did it because overcoming some of the obstacles has us better prepared for the future.

No doubt Winter will hold a number of challenges too :-o

In they go!

How did it go! Your little boy is so cute!

Thought you were only getting 25 originally. Haha! Couldn't help yourself...

@Auroradream26. How did you make those cute spider cookies? That's awesome!

So today I felt like doing nothing. I think I've just been burnt out from a rough week. So I laid around most of the day. Later in the day, I did manage to construct my steps and attach them to the coop. Also fixed my roosts. I sucessfully transferred my flock to their new home too. I closed up the carport pen I was keeping them in, and put some lights on on the new shed. They eventually got the idea, and I will do the same thing tomorrow. Hopefully they will be adjusted after that. Maybe tomorrow I can figure my automatic coop door thingy... Before the rain comes...

Thanks @AnneInTheBurbs! He's great with the chickens and always interested to help. Really glad we started chicken keeping, it's great for our little kids.

Tonight we threw some treats into the run and then locked the 18 week old 4 chickens on one side of the wire and kept the younger 3 on their side. All 4 of us sat and watched for 2 hours on camping chairs to see any fireworks. Nothing happened at all, there was some acknowledgement of each other, but everyone just went about their business. Is this a good sign?? I'm thinking it is.

I've said goodnight and they are in for their first night outdoors.

My plan is to keep it like this for a week, then supervise letting them all out together in 7 days.

I think I'm going to have to put my poor girl Rosie down. She is barely standing now and not really eating. I tried scrambling her some eggs yesterday. She pecked at them a little and seemed interested but didn't eat. I'm leaning towards botulism. It's just weird that I had same thing happen to our Buff Orpington last year at this same time.

In response to those who seem to think I am in some way being "mean" to my chicken : The reason she is alone is because my niece had her and her "sister" with all of her other chickens. They all grew up together, but as the other hens got bigger than the bantams, they started to bully them. My niece came home from work one day to find the other little hen dead. Then, the bigger chickens began picking on this one. She asked me if I'd take the little chicken because she really doesn't have room for two coops. I said yes. This poor little hen has been bullied and picked on by other chickens her whole life. When my neighbor brought the other hen over, she did it at night. We put that hen in with mine in the coop, on the roost. This is one method of "introduction" that is suggested in various threads here in this group. Two days later, the other hen was cowering in a corner of the run, afraid to move. This was not a case of establishing "pecking order". My chicken was attacking her like a rooster in a cock fight, beating her with her feet and wings. I refused to allow this to happen, so I took the other chicken back. I honestly believe that my chicken is so damaged or "traumatized" from her previous existence that she has BECOME a bully herself. She is tame and sweet with people, but hates other animals. She even tries to attack my dogs and pig. It's not like we didn't make a true effort to give her a companion. She simply doesn't want one.
I joined this group because I thought I'd find some tips and advice on caring for my chicken. I didn't think it was just going to be other people lecturing me and talking down to me because I happen to have ONE chicken. (A situation that came about because I chose to give her a home when she needed it.) How awful of me.

Thank you! To make the spiders, you just use a tooth pick when the cookies just come out of the oven and the chocolate chips are still melty, and just dip the toothpick and draw the legs :)
