No, Brownie wasn't broody at the time, but ever since she stole (I'm sure she felt she was just helping) the chicks from the other hen the first time last winter she has always been a very good 'Auntie' to any young chicks in the coop, frequently hanging out with the other broodies and sharing food with the chicks. She raise a clutch of 12 this spring and kept them till they were like 10 or 12 weeks old. She may have started late but she really seemes to enjoy being a broody.
She was a bit puzzled the night we brought her in but she let the chicks hide under her and was being very patient with them so we hoped...the next morning she actually laid an egg while she had the chicks under her in the nest we had provided. We did put a Brinsea heat plate in the cage in another corner so the chicks could go under it if they wanted but after the first day I don't think they ever used it. By the second day she was calling them for food and by the third day she was full out broody attitude and was walking around all puffed up and screeching if anyone got close to her, in particular the roosters.
We have a lot of broodies but I think there are only a couple I would ever even begin to consider adopting to like that, we were actually pretty dumbfounded that it really kicked in like it did. She hasn't laid an egg now since the day after she got the chicks....and they are now around 7 weeks I think. So her hormones really did completely shift or she would have continued egging. We will surely miss her when she finally goes...
That's amazing! My Brownie went broody when she's only 5 month old. Maybe Brownie is a good name for Broodies.

I saw Jo went Broody a lot. I remember she had chicks earlier this year, right?

I'm going for it, if I can get a friend to help me pick it up. It's 8" across, a little too big for my minivan.
That's good deal. It's so good that you can have the capability to have these happy birds now.

I just heard from our company today that they are moving our PA facility oversea. I don't know if I'm going to be able to buy a new house soon. The company could decide to close our department any time, since they already moved all our manufacture lines to Europe. The ridiculous part about it is that our biggest market is United States, not Europe. And we do very special customized products, not something you can import and sell.

You have a good memory...this is Jo's 4th clutch of the year I think...she had a hatch really early in the year, Feb 1 maybe? I would have to check the log to be sure.

Good evening all:

Go get them Blarney!!!

Fisher, your girls are amazing!!!

Congrats on Mocha, she's a looker.....

Well, since the fox attack on my #1roo, my roosters have reshuffled the pecking order, #3 is now #1, #2 spends alot of the day hiding in the coop, and #1 is very deferential....maybe he'll get his game back if not, that'll leave me with Olive eggers not CCLs....

and, I am really getting the urge to get more chicks/hatching eggs....so far, I am part of DH's Sandhill purchase in the spring....and I am going to get some BLRWs in spring....grr...still thinking Americuna and Silkie....I need more acreage....

I put my meat chicks out in the chicken tractor today, they will be 4 weeks old on sunday. I do have two plastic crates out there with bedding and one has a heating pad cave. I'm not really worried about tonight, but this weekend it will be down to freezing. I had to force them to go into the crates tonight and then turn off the flashlight so they (mostly) stayed in there. They will get it eventually, right?

My 6 other chicks are still in the garage, turns out I'm a few extensions cords short this winter, but their crate id all set up and ready in the main coop, just waiting on power.

They figure it out pretty quick, and 4 week old meat birds are pretty independent of heat, those little buggers really produce some body heat! We have raised them in winter, and as long as they are draft free and have an option if needed they will be good.

I have lots of space, but not enough time to care for all the birds. You want to come raise chickens on the farm?
