I have 1 hen that has been wheezing since summer. She also seems underweight and I was expecting her to not make it through the last cold spell, especially since she insists on roosting all by herself, 8 ft up on top of the turkey run in a very exposed location. They are very weather resistant birds, I'm sure that would have killed a chicken. She also wanders off to the neighbors place, about 1/4 mile away and visits the turkeys there. I'm surprised she has not left with a wild flock. I've treated her a number of time, with no improvement, so I assume this is permanent. I'm sorry you are experiencing the same thing, I will not let her in my breeding pen because I am trying to breed for resistance and robustness, which she lacks. I feel sorry for these birds, but I believe there is nothing to be done for them. She doesn't seem to be in any pain and complains whenever I pick her up for any reason, something a truly sick bird does not do.So my turkey Wheezy is still living up to her name. She eats and drinks just fine, but she sounds terrible and and she is underweight. I figured I would try dosing her with Vitamin A. So I squeezed a capsule into some olive oil and put it in a syringe (no needle tip), and squirted in her mouth tonight. I know Vitamin A at high levels came be toxic, but I'm hoping that she is deficient and this will correct it.
When I first got our 20 year old parrot a few years back, he had an respiratory infection. Th vet gave us antibiotics, and said it was definitely because of a lack of vitamin A due to a poor diet. So with Wheezy, I'm hoping maybe a boost will help her, since the antibiotics weren't able to.
@dheltzel . You said you'd answer horticulture questions, right?. I'm trying to plan where to put raised beds next year for maximum sunlight, because we are surrounded by trees here. Should they just go on the south side of the home, or can I show you an aerial view and maybe you could help me determine? She is eating and drinking thankfully. The leg is the right one. She will keep extended but there don't appear to be any lacerations or breaks. Should I blukote it anyway?
Also her cape? Looks more and more like hackles?? Is she really a roo you think? I don't really get to hold the babies much since they are 16weeks and run from me. But this accident gave me a good opportunity to check her out. Chicka might have to be "Chuck"

6 eggs in the bater from the farm to test it out before my Ameraucana eggs come. And 2 Pekin ladies for the girls for Christmas. Snuggling the ducklings is the only thing keeping my spirits up right now. Chickening is harder than I imagined
The weather is a bit drier overall so the chickens tend to do better here. Life is life, just a different part of the US than before.
