Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

But he has the wrong number of toes, that's a disqualification when showing.

And I doubt if he will father any baby in the future, even though he does look very charming.
.

Correct! APA Standard of Perfection demands more than '0' toes on every breed. No shows on his future.

Got my first egg EVER today!!! I think it was my silkie but the others were singing the egg song, including the roo ;)

Sweet!

Hi! from North Berks!

Here is the bator I am borrowing from a family member. I bought a fancy indoor outdoor thermometer, because it had the humidity as well. The "outdoor" sensor is in the incubator. It seems like it's working well, it has help a steady temp all night. Now I keep debating if I should put something in it. I probably should wait for my broody hen to get her brood going first. The unit looks dirty, but I think it hadn't been used in a few years. I wiped the whole thing down with some diluted bleach solution, but the dirt still hides in the crevices.

I am curious, @FluffButt, when you say you want a 'Production Red Rooster'. Is that a Rhode Island Red? Or a Red Sex Linked or... what breed exactly?

Good news all, our first chick has hatched! Other 4 eggs are wiggling around getting ready to pip as well!

So sorry to hear this, I didn't know she was sick... prayers for her husband and young son, I can only imagine how hard this is for them right now. :(

I just had to share this!
So, my two Bearded D'Game Bantams roos were out yesterday free-ranging with their STANDARD-SIZED (LOL) harem of FAT (seriously, one of the hens is a 7-year-old Speckled Sussex who weighs 13 lbs!) hens next to our acre-sized frozen pond. Well, of course, the two glorified mongrels abruptly decide that drinking from such an unsophisticated apparatus such as the humble metal waterer is way, way beneath them and promptly wing it over to the pond. And, much to their irking, the only unfrozen spot is directly in the center of the pond...
Eventually, one very soggy Twilight flew up to his favorite spot in the overhanging oak tree and took up residence there for two hours as a Twi-cicle, while Moonlight skated back to shore triumphantly ,with a heroic perk in his comb, over to his girls with a belly-full of refreshingly-cold ice water!

I swear, that Twilight refused to be seen in public until this morning!

So one of my Silkies (or maybe both, I can't tell) has been sneezing for a week or so. At one point should I does the whole flock with antibiotics? They seem okay otherwise, eating and drinking normally. No runny nostrils or any other symptoms. I know they hide illness well. The silkies are pretty old, probably 6 or 7 years old. The other sick chicken I brought it was euthanized and cremated.

Just reposting this in case it was missed. Just got my copy of this in the mail https://www.amazon.com/Chicken-Heal...83885&sr=8-2&keywords=chicken+health+handbook . I am reading it today to see if there is anything I can do for my chickens in the future. There is so much information in there. I think from what I have read so far, that the little bantam cochin I picked up had a chronic respiratory infection. It seems like the most likely cause is MG. This kind of freaks me out, but I am trying to take it one day at a time. I will be observing the flock very closely right now for any more signs of illness. I don't mind if I have some chickens that get a cold for winter if they get over it, but I do want to have healthy, strong stock.

Wonderful!! Congratulations!

That's so funny! I love when you catch their antics! I saw my rooster and one the turkey hens sparring this morning, first time. The Tom watched closely, but I think he would've intervened if things got out of hand.

I'm betting on the turkey hen taking the roo if push comes to shove. I once had to pull a roo out of a pen when he wasn't taking no for an answer from the turkey hen. She started into what I call "velociraptor" mode, neck arched, making a screeching sound the frankly, scared me. I grabbed him from behind and retreated so he would live to see another day. Turkey hens are fierce when they get upset.
