Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hey all! Well it is supposed to be above 70 tomorrow and I LOVE IT!

My boys and hubby spent their whole weekend on their dirt bikes it seems. I spent the weekend and beginning of the week fighting a cold and I think I'm starting to win!

I'm going away Friday through Monday so I am busy getting the house ready for the boys and hubby to be here without me...food prep, scrub the kitchen etc. Plus, the 9 yo has a piano lesson on Friday so hubby will be in charge of that.

We are kicking around the idea of a temporary fence this summer for the chickens to help keep them out of the vegetable and flower beds and off the porch. I feel kind of bad about it since they love exploring, but it was terrible for my vegetables, bushes and flowers last year. They liked my peonies a lot and liked to sit in the middle of them, destroying the plant. They did the same thing with the onions and carrots, killing the above ground part which really affected our crop yield.

Hope all is well with you guys!

I know the warm weather is fantastic! Please let it be spring already!

I'm going to get my first garden started soon indoors. I also worried about my chickens digging in our tomatoes and eating our crops! I hope they stay out of them. Building a fence around the garden is another chore I really don't have time for.
My fiancée just said to me "Since it's getting warmer out, and Tiny likes being broody, maybe we should get her some eggs to sit on."

Woohoo! We also have a chicken named Tiny and she looks to be our best broody so far. Just be careful because I had a duck one time sit on 20 eggs and once the temperature dropped too low one day, she got off of the eggs, killing them all! They were all just a few days from being ready to hatch

I don't plan on letting my chickens hatch out any eggs until the middle of summer.

Here's my favorite girl, Fluffy, with our 5 chicks. She is incredible with them even though she did not hatch them out herself.

Sadly we looked her over tonight since we noticed her feathers looked horrible because of our rooster. And she has a bad wound on her right side where it has crusted over but I could see that it had ripped through her skin and I could see her meat underneath...

It does not look infected but I still worry about her. If I got my way, she would be staying indoors until she healed. But instead we will be locking up the rooster so only the girls get to go out. We'll probably be butchering him this weekend, something I was not looking forward to, even though he is so aggressive. Here is a picture of him taken this morning.

I worry about our girls being out to free range without a rooster. A while ago we locked up the rooster and Spot (the speckled sussex in the picture with the rooster) got attacked by what we believe was a hawk. I don't know if it was a coincidence or because the rooster was not there to alert her? She had some bad wounds from it but survived. Ugh I'd not be ok if our girls get killed because we had to butcher the rooster... I don't know what to do!

@Blarneyeggs He is the one who gifted me our original flock, so yes he's definitely a keeper! ;)

@FluffyButt789 Yeah I would wait a bit until the weather is a bit more stable. I remember we had a cold snap last year in spring... But I will be keeping my eye out on here for eggs or for a few chicks to integrate. I'm sure I won't have to look far

Oh this weather! And I got a few extra days off this week!! Yeah, I love my girls, but they do love to tear up a garden! Last year, I let them dig all they liked when I was done with the main harvests in the fall. They just love that loose soil.

My fiancée just said to me "Since it's getting warmer out, and Tiny likes being broody, maybe we should get her some eggs to sit on."

Haha! That's the best way to fix a broody!

Well @fisherlady, I candled the eggs tonight. It doesn't look like any of your are developing. :/ I'm not too surprised though, they must have gone through the war before they came to me. I didn't toss any, but I will check again in a few days to be sure. Looks like the four that I put in there from my girls are developing, so at least I know the bator is working. Thank you so much for sending me the eggs, I hope you get a claim from the post office for your troubles.

I got your card in the mail, thank you ((hugs))

I will tell my DH they didnt make it, the post office person he spoke to last week said you may have to take them to your local office as proof of the claim, so don't pitch them yet. I will let you know the details. I have 2 more hens who went broody this week and I will get you a new set of eggs in the very near future!
