So today is day 28 for my broody. She is sitting on turkey eggs (also chicken eggs placed on day 21). I saw her get off today, and there were no pips so far. I hope they start to hatch tomorrow! One of the chicken eggs looked it had some cracks on it, so I suspect that one will not (or did not) make it. Maybe when I check on her tomorrow there will be peeps!

I guess I was spoiled with my bantam Langshans from Msladyhawk. Her girls always hatched out chicks a day earlier than usual.

Fingers crossed! I hope the all hatch!

So, we went to Tractor Supply in Oxford tonight for a bigger water bottle for Pip ( my son's guinea pig) and some hay --and ...They have CHICKS! Amberlinks, Americanas (sic) "red and brown ones" (direct quote from the worker there) and ducklings. SOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!

Blarney--I am SO sorry to hear of your loss. Did you take that flashlight to your son?

(just kidding--but I wish I had the time to farm sit for you! I would LOVE to!)

Sorry I know I'm asking questions everyday lol. Does anyone here use the fermented food? And about how many eggshells would I need to supply enough calcium for 30 hens if I were to get off the calcium added food. I think I'd rather let them regulate themselves. We are going to have a bunch of different types of birds and a bunch of different ages so I was thinking about switching to the all flock? feed instead. Not sure yet.
Fermented feed is great! In my experience I use a quarter less feed when I use it fermented. Currently we use 4 gallons fermented or 6 gallons regular, it's the same feed whether wet or dry. I recommend it highly. I make my own main mix and supplement with egg layer crumbles

so while I was away this past weekend, we lost all of our layers to raccoons. it's so discouraging, makes me feel like I can't ever go away. It's incredibly hard to get someone to watch over things the same way I do.
So sorry!

I also know a local source for hatching eggs.

In the incubator, I have found turkey eggs to be much more unpredicatable than chickens as to hatch date. It is fairly common for them to hatch 2 days early or late. More often, a day early, such that I adjusted the incubation time to 27 days, but there were some very late ones, so don't count them out.

So basically you have given me no advice. Haha! I know, I just have to be patient....:smack

TMI Alert:

Eek! Today I had a pain on my upper thigh, like I had a bad scratch, perhaps from running into something and forgetting about it. No big deal. Tonight it was still bothering me so I looked closer. It was a tick trying to burrow his way in! Little jerk left a nice pea sized black mark from trying to chew his way in. Guess it's one benefit of having thunder thighs! I didn't get the head out, but I suspect it will work its way out in a couple of days. I will be keeping my eye on it...
