And, a few pics from the weekend...

I finally got my first olive eggs from Hazel, the Welsummer x Legbar. :) I'm very pleased with them, and her.

And, Ms. Chamomile, my EE, will officially turn 8 years old on Wednesday (I looked back at my records to find her hatch date)! After those two near death experiences recently, she is back out with the flock and looking good.

Here she is as a day old:

And yesterday, enjoying the weather:

And here are just a couple more pics--such a nice weekend to do some yard work, and watch the girls enjoy a little dust bathing and messing up the mulch we just put down.

Gorgeous ladies and eggs!

One good molt later, and they will all look lovely.

I'm linking this thread here, poultry shaming! Its so funny. Because we all need a laugh. Below are a couple of my recent contributions.

@dheltzel. Dennis, I'm mentioning you because you hatch out so many chicks. I think my (suspected) little Roo has a hatch defect! I just noticed it tonight. It looks like he has a toenail growing out of the side of his feet! He does have feathered legs, but this is much lower and starting to curl. Have you ever seen anything like this before? Could it be because of inbreeding I wonder? I've heard cats grow extra toes when they are inbred... So weird!

Anyone?

@AnneInTheBurbs sorry I can't help. That is odd though.

So again today I got an egg from each of the lavender girls. It only took me 3 days this time to gather the amount that I've been setting weekly from them. It really makes me wonder how many that boy has broken and eaten/feed to them. The girls do come running to the eggs like they're getting a treat when I collect them so they know that they taste good, they just don't know the trick to breaking them open apparently. Hopefully, I can redirect them away from the eggs and to treats at collecting time.

I have WAY too many roos right now. I'm going to try to convince hubby to help me butcher 3 tomorrow to cut back. It's going to be tough since he hates butchering and hasn't had a warning but it needs done. There are quite a few that aren't old enough yet too so they still have some time but the older boys are being pretty rough on the girls. Time for some to go.

Alrighty... So I currently have 1 silkie and 2 NHR hens - all are approximately 1 year old this week!

I have on my wishlist...

- Silver/golden laced Wyandotte (I've always loved their coloring)
- Dominique (Again, eye-candy. I believe TSC sells chicks, and I read that their temperament is sweet)
- EE or other blue egg layers
- Welsummer (chocolate eggs!)

I am interested in the chicken train if anyone has the above and will be participating! I also travel to Harrisburg often, so I can make pit-stops!

I found fertilized eggs on CL, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for Tiny to hatch eggs yet (I'm not sure when her next broody spell is coming yet, either) especially because then I'll have to find homes for boys if my "lucky" streak of my last year's straight run continues!

I have enlisted a friend to help build our run, since I've never done anything remotely structural as far as building. Planning on a 10'x10'ish covered structure, because I am sick of a muddy run! Gonna be a bit tricky with the existing coop there, so it'll have to be almost like an 'L' shaped addition. Researching chicken runs forever...

Man I hate butchering too. I wish roosters had the same temperament as the hens. I wouldn't mind having more than just 1 rooster.

. Maybe it will go better as a surprise, like ripping off a bandaide -don't give him any time to dread it. Sometimes I don't tell the kids that we're going to the dentist until we are pulling into the parking lot.

I kinda doubt it but that's a nice thought lol.

Are my kids the only ones who actually love going to the dentist? They look forward to it! lol
