I doubt it makes much difference. All Biels in the US are derived from a single import by Greenfire, so if inbreeding is the source of their problems, there is no way out of that, other than crossing them to some other breed. If I were to embark on  an improvement program, I would say the best breed to use is a the Welbar. They are quite similar in many ways.

Hi ,
there is another way then cross breeding .
Bob Blosl also explained it to me one day when I asked him . It goes like this : two people take birds from the same Foundation. they live at least 500 miles apart. in five to six years they swap Birds(for whatever they need at the time). because of the difference in management, feed, climate , and breeding decisions, the result will be more like a line breeding than inbreeding.
Bob explain to me that veteran breeders do this as a way to keep their lines robust without losing the stability of their gene pool by outcrossing or Crossbreeding.
Best,
Karen

To my fellow sodden friends in PA:
Except ours has almost 2 feet.

Yep, never ever have a basement in a wet location. We don't have a basement, but our house is above a garage, and yet we have a "river" running from one side of the garage to the other. Yuck

Hubby wasnt to happy with Batty. She was nice enough to point out he has some securing to do tomorrow lol. No ones happy because we blocked off some of their favorite perches for the 8 week olds who are spending their first night in coop. I miss them already but my herd of Bantams are happy getting into the big brooder!

Oh lucky! My chicks need to go out to the coop NOW. They smell so awful! Your Batty reminds me of one of mine, who loves to fly lol!

Please remember that Muscovy/Pekin are mule ducks, and won't be able to breed.

What does that mean? I've heard of some chicken breeds that when mixed, they can't breed either? What is that all about?

No muscovies yet. Just the Welsh Harlequins.

Biggest hatch of the year (so far) this weekend. 214 out of the incubators, at least 15 more still drying off and not counted yet.

Holy moly

How in the world do you have the space and the time for all that?!

The Mallard didn't wait for his food to be wet down, and the others all waited for him to go first!

I love that!!!

When a horse and a donkey mate, they produce mules. Mules are sterile.

Mule Ducks or Moulards

Muscovy and domestic ducks (such as the Pekin - which were developed from Mallards) are very different as they have been genetically isolated for over 50 million years. They can be crossed but you get some very interesting results. If you cross a Muscovy male with a Pekin female you will hatch moulards (or mule ducks); if you cross a Pekin male with a Muscovy female the progeny are called hinnies.

In Europe and in Asia many mule ducks are produced because of their large size, quality liver and reduced fat content in the carcass. Artificial insemination has been developed in ducks due to the desire to produce mule ducks. If left to mate naturally, the fertility is only 20-30%. Artificial insemination brings the fertility up to 80%. Whereas a Pekin takes 28 days to hatch and a Muscovy takes 35 days, a mule or hinny takes 32 days to hatch.

Approximately 60% of mule ducks are males. Some of their characteristics are like the Muscovy as they are large, quiet, slow moving and have long claws but are also like Pekin as they swim well, the males and females are much the same size and they do not fly.

Hinnies are not grown commercially. Males hinnies are much larger than female hinnies, like the muscovy, yet the females look like Pekins but fly quite well.

Mules and hinnies cannot reproduce. Both males are sterile and only the hinny females lay eggs (though they cannot hatch). If you have Muscovy and Pekin together, the chances are poor that they will cross but if they do, a hinny will probably be the result as Pekin males can catch Muscovy females easier than Muscovy males can catch Pekin females.

when and where does the chicken train travel? And do you have white muscovys for sale? Have my heart set on them since motorcycle chick told me I may have purchase them from tsc. I looked into the breed an fell in love. My ducks did turn out to be pekin. Their legs and beams are orange now.

Wow congrats! I guess you sure just getting started then...

That's wonderful. O many would have given up on him.

TSC sucks me in every time. I went to go pick up feed with my daughter and she paid for these guys, and their feed. I had the rest of the set up obviously
My children and I have a problem. In two years were up to 5 ducks and 12 chickens. MY Daughter is already asking for a goat. Lord help us. My husband is going to move

Haha, I may be having that problem eventually too.

Thanks Karen! That is very interesting!

Asking for prayers this morning, but not for myself. My next door neighbor, the gentleman we bought the house from, died suddenly yesterday. I don't know what happened, but I do know he had heart problems. I think his son may have found him. The poor man hadn't even been able to move into his new home he had built. I could see his kids were in shock yesterday. I'm very very sad also, he seemed like a wonderful man for the 6 months we knew him. :hit

Edited for spelling.:p

So sorry to hear, sudden deaths are very difficult for families (though none are easy, as we all know)
