I’ve ordered my girl scout cookies. Have you?

IT’S COOKIE TIME!!

I had them. My girls were flighty and barely ever laid. When they did lay, they would for a week or so then go broody and raise to lay again for a month or two. They were beautiful and my roo was friendly but as far as production.....

I only have one little hen, but so far she is laying very well. My friend has the other 5 females from the hatch, so I will have to ask him if he is getting the same results. Just chiming in because I can, haha!

I saw my turkeys playing keep away with an egg today. So now I know those boogers (and maybe some chickens) are eating the eggs. I. Sure it’s worse right now because everything is covered in snow. Arg!

Talk me into? As in what breed(s)? I`m up for suggestions. It`s probably time for an infusion of young blood this year anyway. I go to Davis Feed Mill in Rushland, Bucks Co. One used to be able to get all kinds of cool birds like chukar, bobwhite (I think) quail, wild turkeys, ringneck pheasants. They took orders for some nice layer breeds like black Australorp, but got burned too many times with people not picking up chicks they ordered, so now they`re back to "Breeds X, Y, and Z will be in the week of whenever, while supplies last." I got my two australorps from them, but that was several years ago already. Now they have the basic ones like RIR, white leghorn , barred rock, EE. And maybe one or two I`m forgetting. I`d like something with a bit of color. My EEs are pretty, and the aussies, and a couple of mutt hens like the EE x RIR that is a beautiful rich chestnut color, darker than the pure (?) RIRs. I`d love a speckled Sussex or two.

I am SO tempted to get a couple of turkey poults because they are reinstating the "Big Gobbler Contest" this year. Haven`t had turkeys for quite a few years now. But this winter has me rethinking the whole running out to the pens and pouring hot water into water receptacles business.

Wow! You drive all the way up to Davis feed? That’s up near me. I am in northern Bucks county. http://www.pickeringvalleyfeed.com/ Has a good selection of choice every year, if you don’t mind the drive. @dheltzel definitely has some wonderful hard to find varieties also. He has a ton of knowledge too, and is right on point with his advice. I call him my “poultry pimp”, but I’m sure he’s not thrilled with that description. I have several of his fine fowl. He also introduced me to the fun world of turkeys. And then @Auroradream26 helped me as well.

You're not that far from me in northern Chester Co. I have a number of different breeds of chickens, as well as turkeys, ducks, guineas, and maybe peafowl.
My recommendations for layers are Cream Legbars, California Greys, Penedesencas and 3 hybrids I make, one lays olive eggs and the other 2 are blue egg layers.

:goodpost: Still waiting on those diuck pictures... :smack

I would usually buy some, but I’m not eat8ng that stuff right now, and I’m trying to keep hubs away from the sweets too right now.

So I did it, I ordered some Bielefelder eggs on eBay. I only got the auction for 10 eggs, so I will have to do my best. I saw in a Biele thread that others had ordered from this seller, and were very happy with their purchase as well.

When they are shipped, I am supposed to keep the pointy side down for 24 hours, right?

My leghorn chicks are so big right now. Thankfully, I have found a home for the two Roos, someone wants them as watchers (they have another for breeding) on their farm.

Thank you!
You’re welcome. May I post the link on other threads?

Turkeys are great. You just have to be sure you have enough of them!
You can donate cookies too. It still helps support the GS.

Just popping in to say we got a ice fishing hut and all the equipment so we're going out for our first time ever this weekend. So excited! :wee

Also, for chicken news, I've noticed every night one of my hens combs is bleeding. I'm not sure what is going on. They're out to free range and it's too cold for me to stay out and watch all day. I suspect it's our young rooster trying to mate with the hens, but I've never seen so much bleeding from mating before. Or they're bored and picking on each other. Or the mature roo is suddenly being rough? It better stop or someone is going to the freezer. :barnie

Plus......... is it spring yet?!?!?! :th
