POSSUMS!

Are they any threat to chickens? We found a huge one... I mean huge enough to eat a tiny dog for breakfast! He was trying to get under our chicken coop. Cute face and all but we definitely didn't like that. Hubby wanted to shoot it but I just hit/pushed him with a broom and he ran off. Will watch to see if he comes back but I hope not!

‘Cute face and all’. :love

Love the looks of the Lav Ams, wish they were as Mareks resistant as the other colors. I may go for them anyway when I stuff eggs under my broody. So far, I've got Lav Ams, Cream Legbar, and Cali Gray on the list. And any others that are good dual purpose. I figure my mixed flock might as well stay mixed.

They are, and once they reach adulthood, I rarely ever lose one, so that helps me automatically select for the strongest genes (only the strongest ever breed for me). I refuse to "coddle" a weak bird and lost more youngsters than others might, but I feel like this is a long term improvement project, not a short term "quick money" project.
I wish they were easier to sex as youngsters, I raised a lot of males this year. They tend to grow faster, but other than that, it is hard to tell. Their hackle feathers get pointed, but because the lavender gene frays their feathers more than the blacks, they are much harder to sex by that criteria also. If I could sex them at 2 months of age, I could sell lots of pullets for $40 each, but when I have to raise them to 6 months or so, that is just not workable.

We lost one of our khaki campbells to a hawk, which brought us down to two hens, so went out and got three ducklings.

We're wondering if anyone within the state is planning on doing an order with Metzer around late March or early April? We're interested in getting one Roman tufted gosling, so hopping on a bigger order would be appreciated. Willing to drive far.

I'm in Warren about 1 1/2 hours from Erie. I want my children to feel as comfortable as possible around the chicks so we will spend time with them often. My husband has given me a 10 chicken max at any given time HAHAHA so our coop will only be big enough for 10 for now. If we feel we want more later we will just add on. Thank you!

I'm near Erie, so if you need anything, let me know. @yoopergirl1211 is near you as well but she has not been active on here lately. But she does sell a lot of birds!

Fact: Orpingtons are the very best chickens. This is my unbiased opinion. :thumbsup

I AGREE!!!

@dheltzel @Auroradream26 Got my Bielefelder eggs in the mail today. I'm surprised how light some of the eggs are. The egg at the top left is from my Ayam Cemani hen. I'll plop a few of my own eggs in there just for kicks.

I know I am supposed to let them rest for 24 hours, but I will be out all day tomorrow until close to 9:00 pm. Can I put them in the pre warmed incubator tomorrow, morning and turn on the automatic turner when I get home? These are shipped eggs, and I'd like to get them going in a decent amount of time.

It should be ok if you do that I would think.
