Hello all, it has been awhile since I have been around, my little flock of 8 are doing well, however I have a broody hen my flock is 2 years old and I want to add a couple chicks!! Does anyone here have or know where I can get 4 or 5 fertile eggs to let her sit on to add to my flock!!

I have lots of broodies now, so I succumbed to broody-fever and put 25 black ameraucana eggs under 3 of them. 2 are smaller hens that are in the same nestbox. They are Kraienkoppes, known for being broody a lot, and when one goes broody, the other follows within a few days. They are covering 13 eggs with no problem. The other is a Penedesenca, she has a dozen, being a larger hen.

That's actually a good thing! Because so far we've been doing really badly with the Black Am eggs. :hmm

So, Yesterday @LeBlackbird came over and we butchered our 5 broilers. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be! The way we did it was, Keith tied them up on the tree, let the body hang, decapitated, and backed up! I was watching the first one from the run where the meaties were and couldn't stop laughing. (I know, it sounds horrible, but when you see a headless chicken start flapping around like crazy for the first time it's kinda funny).

Now here's where it gets a little sad. At the same time that we were butchering the meaties, our Ameraucana eggs were/are still hatching in the incubator. I had one Black Am that was almost completely zipped so Susan and I just let him be thinking he'll be fine! Turns out that he died right as he was about to get out of the egg.... And then! We had a little guy hatching out of the small end of the egg! He's still alive but his yolk sac is still huge and attached and I don't know what to do.

I'm just... ugh. :barnie:he:rant:hitThe Silver Ams on the other hand are doing just fine we've had three or four hatch so far.
 
We now interrupt your regularly scheduled program to bring you... stacking Broodys! A Bielefelder hen with a turkey. These lucky girls (and a couple others) will be getting any turkey chicks that hatch out of the Incubator. So far, 11 eggs are developing!
