Darn it, I have to remember to double latch the gate or Fenris can get through it. He got 2 of the old girls - my reliable broody was one of them. Maybe the hen we didn't let go broody will try again next year. If I can keep the danged dog away from them or get him trained to not go after them.

So sorry :hugs

Good Grief! :hugsSo sorry...seems it might be easier to double latch gate than teach the dog..once they like getting a hold of things, it gets harder to break the habit.
A training collar works wonders for these issues...had one for our Springer to teach "leave it".
Didn't have to use it long, he got the idea, when we wanted him to drop the animal he retrieved after we took it down, he would just plop it right at our feet.
He was good to go after a few times hunting with the collar on, then we would put the collar on him but not turn it on...later he didn't even need to wear it.
They aren't cheap, but neither is replacing birds and having to wait what seems a millennia for eggs.:rant
Just a thought.:hugs..good luck!

I was wondering about training collars. Percy has such a high prey drive and high IQ, I bet he would realize as soon as it was off. (He only steals food off the counter when I am out of the kitchen).
I have my son's guinea pig cage well out of reach too--instinct is hard to combat.

Good thing to keep cages up & very secure!!
Agreed! Instinct is very hard to override, especially if they have been able to act on it...get a "taste" for things, so to speak, but they can be swayed, reprogrammed with "hints/interruptions" in their thought process to stay focused on what you need them to be focused on and positive reinforcement.:hugs
The Springer (Fudd), just needed to mature a bit with the hunting drills...he was a very good dog.
We have found that most dogs do not fully mature in their training until around 2 years old. That is when training gets more serious here, until then it is more about manners, pack behavior and basic commands.
Big no-no's: noses on tables, counters & plates.
People food is for people puppies! We don't really have to worry about counters & table tops too much now..little dogs..I will say this though..they do have incredible vertical leaps!!...We understand why the circus would use Pomeranians in their acts...very agile dogs & smart!:jumpy

I’m grateful Maaco stays off counters after only a few corrections. I baited him to be sure, and he hasn’t taken it. Of course, I try to not temp him now.

Tell me I don’t want another Beagle though. I was offered a second two days ago. I have another person that wants him, so I’m spared... this time! But if they offer again, I will be in trouble!

You are familiar with the phrase 'misery loves company'.....
You would quickly become familiar with it's sister phrase 'mischief loves company'!
The only thing harder to control than a hound dog with a scent is a pair of them egging each other on when something seems interesting!
