How sad! It’s bad enough for some birds to be picked off by a predator, but this is much worse. So sorry that happened. People can be jerks.
Isn’t it crazy? Nearby in Philly, last year they seized I believe 1000 meat bird chicks that someone was raising on a lot. I tried to adopt some, but I can’t lie and I told them that they have to be euthanized at some point. They said I couldn’t take them then, and they had found a vegan rescue or saomething that was going to try to raise them differently... Yeah, I wonder how that turned out.
Hello there! How are you? Long time no see. I don’t know if you remember me, but I purchased your meat birds a few years ago. I’m raising my own now.Hope you’re doing well. Pretty sure @dheltzel has small Australian spotted ducks.
I realize this was a bit ago...but,
About those "meat" bird chicks..so,your not able to humanely euthanize those birds when time comes, and they just let those birds grow until....? yeah, that's sooo much more humane.
Some , even those who are dubbed "professional" or "expert" really don't know what they are doing. JMO.
Did DH put you up to this to test me???
....you are killing me here....if I said yes, I do believe I would be getting the privilege of sleeping with the chickens. I like those birds, but not that much, sorry.

...not a bad investment though, $$ 20.00I've spent $15 for wyandottes not yet laying. Don't think $20 is asking too much if they are already laying. If I liked the "breed" or "breeding", I'd spend more. JMOOk.... so how much is the going rate for hens from 10-14 months.... Laying, some already brooded? Many are 7+ lbs due to white rock blood?
Someone just said he would buy them for $5??? Sorry, but at that $ I will let them egg for the summer and butcher them myself in the fall.... I know they aren't worth a fortune but for cripes sake food isn't free and these birds are young and actively egging, not worn out hens!
I told him no thanks, I will keep the eggs and meat for ourselves at that price!

..anyway,....would like to share some pics, in other words, I am going to totally piggy-post now...
Have fenced off some area for the birds to enjoy, leaving the coop/run area open for them to go into to lay their eggs because they are wayy too dignified to plop down anywhere but in the coop....whatever. Also have the garden open for them to dig, scratch and just be in chicken heaven for the most part.
They are doing well at keeping the grass at an even growing length. No need to mow.
Just have to rake the mulch back where it belongs after they are put to bed. Easy-peasy & very happy chicks! Lots of eggs too.

Fur kids. The first little girl (gold tag), is the daughter of the (multi-color) Mom & (black/green tag) Dad.We had bred them last year. They had two pups-girls. The other daughter went to her forever home. She was all chocolate, very beautiful.
Oh..I almost forgot. The garlic planted earlier is all up and doing awesome...at least it was, hopefully this rain hasn't destroyed it...

I have had issues with panting in the fall for a spring crop so decided to switch things up & plant it like I do the onions, in spring..duh.
this pic was taken a bit ago, but almost all the sprouts are up now
garlic is between the first tree(closest) & the wood post right before the second tree .
If you squint really hard you can see all the little sprouts of green in the mulch.. Have also fertilized a little in between the rows, worked down a little into the mulch.

I am glad you got your camera! Great to see all of the pictures. The dogs are adorable
I don't plant a traditional garden anymore.... but I really should do garlic and some herbs with as much as I use for cooking.....
Going to go to swap at Ebensburg Agway in the morning. I have almost 20 laying hens and a handful of teenagers to sell. Hoping weather doesn't mess it up.
