Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Yesterday I reached into a darkened nestbox to hunt for duck eggs (the Australian Spotted hens think it great fun to cover their eggs with bedding). I got bitten by an irate duck! I decided to leave her with 7 marked eggs to see if she can hatch and raise ducklings this late in the year.
Then in another pen, a lavender cochin bantam hen was sitting on eggs also. Maybe they somehow know it will be a mild winter.

I decided to winter with the trio of chickens I have, but allow for impulse addition. If the feed store has pullets, I might be tempted into it. Duckling wants to incubate though. That will work because I can set six to eight (dozen) eggs, get two or three girls, and try processing again. The last time I wasn’t prepared, and messed up. Duckling loved her nuggets and tenders, but the job wasn’t pretty.

My coop is a good size and I winterize it good. Plus I have some hens that are great and raising chicks for me.

I found 3 new born kittens on Friday night. On a trailer with hay on. Not sure where they came from. So now bottle feeding.

Bottle feeding is not easy. I helped feed some baby kittens before. They screamed every a couple hours or so. Even worst than human babies. Maybe the mom will come back?

I just be so afraid that the babies will get cold. Last time, I had them in my garage until about 10 weeks old, and I still feeled it's too early to send them to coop. If I get chicks now, they may spend a half year in my garage. Hubby and I both don't have the capability to process, so we are relying on Dennis to get only girls. I love the taste of those real free-range chicken though.

I'm not ready for baby chick! I'm not ready for baby chick! I'm not ready for baby chick! No duck either!

I do hope it's a mild winter, so I can start early next year. Last time I got some chicks at the end of February, they caught cold when moving to the coop on May. If this winter is too cold, I'll wait until March.

I lost a few chicks this past year because they were unhealthy when I bought them. In the past seven years, I have never had an issue putting chicks outside even in the snow at a very young age.
I cannot deny that I feel like I have failed so many times this past year, in so many ways. I’m embarrassed, but I also see others struggling, so I’m trying to be brave. I just hope no one puts me down the way one person did. I couldn’t even get the help I needed because I was so embarrassed.

Here is the baby kittens. They eat lot. I got them to without food during the night so I can sleep. I have to use a syringe to feed them they don't like the nipple I have on the bottle.

Do worry. Everybody have their own way to deal with things. And we all make mistakes. No one should get blamed unless they are doing something bad on purpose.
