I searched online for the breeders club sites. I was able to find breeders for most of them, even some in ME! It seems you need to join most if not each of the sites to access the breeders lists, but I think it's free.
I think I see where your 4-H leader is coming from, but he voiced his opinion as fact and is wrong. Every hatchery sells pure bred chickens. Not each chicken is pure, for example, most sell Easter Eggers and call them Ameraucana, but that's the most blatant one. I've bought Wyandottes, Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Welsummers and more. They probably aren't show quality, I've never tried to show them. But, they do seem to meet breed standards. They aren't mixes. Proper feathers, combs, leg color, egg color, etc. Not mixed with anything else so they would lay more eggs.
Good luck with your decision! I think it's great that you have a leader who is trying to promote quality in showing, even if they're a little misguided.
