Do all adult turkeys perch? We rescued Jack about 3 months ago (we only had him 2 days at this picture), his feet were pretty swollen and urine burned but he is healing pretty nicely, although he still walks very slowly and carefully. Jack has a perch in his coop but doesn't seem the least bit interested in getting up on it. He sleeps under it. He is molting right now and losing all those ugly feathers and should be a beautiful guy. I was just wondering maybe the perch should be lower, its about 4 ft off the floor. Maybe if I put a bale of hay in front of it he'll get up. Not that it matters whatever he wants to do, I just want whats best. Does anyne know how old he may be? Someone here told me he's a Blue Slate , pretty handsome guy. Thanks all.

Hi! Good to hear he's doing well (remember your initial post on this guy). Our big Slate toms gave up on roosting at a year-and-half. They were perfectly happy hunkering down in the straw and wood chips in the shed (Royals and Slate hen pref. the roost's 2x4's). Just keep a dry, clean area for the guy and add some extra straw in the winter.

Yeah, just let them do what they want as long as they have a roof to protect against rain and safety from predators.

Man I sooo wish I could have a turkey.

They are just magnificent. Where I live tho it would not be a great idea as I dont
want to give cause for the neighbors to get their feathers in a fluff.
