Birds have a long life span and do like to attach to people and need lots of attention. If that is fine with you then hand raised Lovebirds are wonderful.

Otherwise, I vote for a guinea pig! They are sweet, cuddly and they purr! If you have to go on vacation you will have no trouble finding someone to care for them, it id hard to be afraid of them, it is a fluffy ball of love! We had 20 guinea pigs at one point, learn from this, keep boys and girls apart!

I have to agree with the rat as a great pet! A year ago I wouldn't have believed it. This is probably not always true but I have found that the fancy colored rats are the friendliest. Our rat is named Molly and he, yes he will come to his name. They are very hardy animals and loving. Easy to take care of. We have a rabbit and it is not too friendly. He won't let you hold him and is skittish.

Have you thought of getting him involved in 4-H? Maybe showing a chickens or something? Gosh... I wish I had when I was young
