I came home from work today to find that two of my chicks had a case of pasty-butt. One of them, the yellow chick, was the biggest chick of all yesterday (day 1), now she is tied for smallest in just one day. My wife cleaned them up, and they both took big poops, so I think that went well. I went and got them some parakeet grit and gave them a little scrambled egg and yogurt.

They dove into the grit. They seem to love it. Is it OK for me to let them have their fill? Seems like an awful lot of rock to eat, but what do I know? I am human.

They are mostly ignoring both the egg and yogurt. Except for Old Yeller'. She fell asleep standing in the egg.

I am a bit worried about her. All the other chicks are noticeably bigger, she isn't. And that weird standing chicky narcolepsy thing. Is there anything I ought to do? She seems to be happy and hungry between naps.

Also..I noticed one of the chicks seems to think her sisters' eyes look delicious. Is this normal, or should I separate the little optivore? Chickens are hilarious and dumb.

with my last bunch of chicks I had a little naked neck that looked so fragile for the first two weeks, then she took off and now is bigger than most of her sisters (all other breeds) she did seem to do better once I started adding electrolytes to the water.

As to the optivore, I had several. I guess an eyeball looks a little like food to a chick. They alway wanted to taste everything, luckily they were usually pretty gentle and the chick being pecked would turn away quickly.

there is a reason the word "bird brain" is used. Its amazing how smart that can be trying to get out of something but somehow they can never figure out how to get back in.
