Perhaps a Hawk Attack?

There is about 10 inches of snow on the ground and the girls do not like going out of the run, however; they're obviously bored penned up all day, despite our efforts to keep them entertained (ie: sunflower seeds thrown onto the straw, cabbage basket etc.) we still like to give them the option of venturing out.

My dear husband SHOVELED a path from their coop/run across the yard to the pool deck. The girls like it under there.
He left the door open for the girls to come out of their pen and he went for a walk. When he came back, the door to the run was closed and only three girls were inside.
Outside was a pile of feathers.

I am out of town and this is the picture he sent me.

There were no tracks in the snow - no blood and no chicken.
Upon receiving the dreaded email, I called my husband immediately - rattling off a gazillion questions - all of which he could answer only two of them!
My concern was the hawk swooped up the hen and perhaps couldn't hold onto her for any great distance and dropped her.
For my own piece of mind, I needed hubby to make a thorough pass of our yard to find the hen.
He grudgingly agreed even though he already looked for her earlier.

He called me 15 grueling minutes later to report when he went out to the pen, the hen was waiting at the closed door ... in a daze and missing a bunch of feathers off her rear end. ::YEAH::

She was eager to join the others.

I've instructed dear husband NOT to let the girls out anymore this week in hopes of deterring a further attack.
The featherless hen still seems to be in a daze. She is eating and drinking and the other girls are not picking on her.
All good news to me.

My questions are:
1) Will she grow her feathers back?
2) How long will she be dazed?
3) Should we separate her from the rest of the girls (we only have 4 chickens)
4) Is there anything else we should be looking for?

In advance, thanks for your advice.
Teri

Dogs attack from behind like that. All of my birds who have been attacked was by a dog, and all were missing tail/back feathers. I hope you figure it out!!

She should be fine, you don't need to separate her as long as she is eating and drinking and there are no signs of injury. She will grow her feathers back eventually and depending on how much trauma there was, she will probably be a little quiet for at least several hours. It does sound more like a dog attack, except for the fact that there were no tracks. How big is she?

He left the door open and when he came back the door was shut and 3 of them were inside? Dont sound like a hawk to me. She will grow her feathers back. She shouldnt be dazed long at all. Only seperate her from the rest if they go to picking on her. Watch up on poles or any where a bird of prey can perch. If you have any onry kids in the neighborhood you may keep an eye out on them.

FLIPPACASE: Too funny ... insta-molt!

CHIKNMANIA: No tracks around the pen - I don't think it was a dog. Additionally, our entire yard is fenced and the only animal I've ever seen jump the fence is a deer!
The hen is 34 weeks old - not sure how much she weighs. The picture below was taken December 12th.

CATFISH/OKIE: Onry kids in the neighborhood ... hmmmmmm? We're out on 5 acres. There were no animal or human tracks (except for my husband's hoof prints.)

Glad to know the feathers will grow back - hate to think she'll freeze her butt off for the remainder of the winter!

With no tracks around it does sound like an aerial attack. A hawk is a good assumption in my opinion. A hawk would also try to attack from the back end to avoid being seen coming in. I'm glad your little girl survived the scare!

unless it was human and your husband didn't see a difference between his tracks and other person tracks.
why was the door closed? how could 3 be in and 1 still out?

glad they are all ok!

you should go out and back track her tracks to see where she came from and look for more clues. If it looks like she came from thin air I would say bird of pray even though if I was I'm almost positive you would of never saw her again. If not I noticed that when any of my gamebirds get scared they sometimes drop there feathers, so she might of had a hawk swoop at her. Can she fly, if so she might of gotten attack by a weasel as their tracks are tinny and flew 50 ft to get away, most of the time they dont give up so I have not clue what did this to your chicken. Wish I had answer for you sorry.
