We treated our hens 2 days ago with Prozap. Today we saw a lot mites on top of their feathers on their backs and gave a quick dusting on top. New hatch, or does the dust drive them to the surface? Is there such a thing as overdoing it with the dust? How long does it take to kill the bugs?

Generally you need to dust or spray them weekly for 3-4 weeks to break the life cycle. You need to also treat the coop. It probably doesn't hurt to treat more than once, but I'd follow the directions on product.

Permethrin kills almost immediately. I watched fruit flies in it, (parrot cage) and they floundered for a few seconds, then died.

Like @oldhenlikesdogs said, you need to break their life cycle as that doesn't kill eggs. In typical cases, they recommend once, then 7-10 days later. If you've got them bad, then another week or two to be sure you get every last one of them.
