Each fall I collect wild persimmons and freeze them. I pull out a handful every once in a while and feed them to the quail. They love them and it's a good source of vitamins during the winter.
 
Great idea. I did similar with acorns, except didn't freeze them, just stored and fed them to the chickens cracked. If you're not trying to get max production out of your birds then supplementing their feed with different things like that can help save a little money and doesn't hurt anything if done in moderation. I think the birds enjoy, and benefit, from the change from all dry pellets/crumbles.
