personally,would YOU be intersted in...

My pet quality calls are in with my mallards, its possible they will mix though it wont be intentionally (like im not selectively breeding them) they are just a small happy flock together and I'm not going to split them up they are our pets. If someone is interested in the ducklings awesome. The pet quality calls aren't much smaller than my mallards anyhow so they may actually make some pretty colors!

I have two call/mallard mixes, one of them is the color of a "grey" call, only abit more fawny, she's getting white on her belly and chest, and has a white throat, she's abit bigger, about the size of a mallard, but very round and short like a call, she also has the calls attitude.

the other is ofcourse, Jingo, she's teeny, call sized, she's more mallard shaped LOL, but small like the call, and have a more call-y head LOL

i'll get some pics of Surrobbi later.

ETA: thats all my call boys are, pet quality, we got three from a friend who had a completly different view of keeping ducks, and expected them to forage for themselves, needless to say, they were thin, they had bad legs, and could barely walk without tripping or limping.

I have specific goals I'm breeding for, so I actually wouldn't be interested in mallards or calls or mallard/call mixes for my flock. BUT, I think a lot of folks who just want some backyard ducks and aren't planning to breed them wouldn't care if they were mixed. If you aren't breeding for a particular purpose, and just want some more ducks to mess around with, I don't really see a problem with mixing them up.

I know a lot of pet people, especially dog and cat breeders & lovers, have a big problem with "backyard breeding," and I agree with them on animals like cats and dogs where there is a huge overpopulation problem and no humane way of dealing with the "extras." However, when it comes to livestock, even if they are "pet" livestock, there is a simple solution to overpopulation that is sustainable and environmentally friendly, so I have no problem at all with folks messing around with them, as long as they treat both their stock and their offspring humanely (and I include "freezer camp" as a humane option so long as the butchering process is conducted in a humane manner).

Whatever you decide, good luck and have fun.

well said!!!!!

Not to mention people seem to forget the fact that many of us have HATCHERY stock.... with that said most hatchery stock aren't always pures or aren't always show quality and they still breed their hatchery stock together.... not to mention all ducks except scovies are all mallard origin...so theres no big deal, the only big deal is one people make it out to be. Breed and enjoy your ducks the way you see fit but i deffinatly reccomend NOT doing it for money.

technically it's not a cross since they are the same species

And they don't have pedigrees like purebred dogs and cats do....they could but most people don't. It'd be very easy for someone to tell a mix from a pure....and most deffiantly that cross would make for a medium sized duck that looks nothign like a SQ call so the confusion would be really small i'd figure... most people wanting SQ stock buy from reputable breeders anyhow (or should).
