pet rooster spurring kids

my roo is nice but cautious. he doesn't seem to like tennis shoes, he ran up to me yesterday when i had some on like he was going to do something but i said 'elvis, don't even think about it' and he ran off.

my neighbor, however, had a mean one. her roo would attack. everyone! he got me good one time, i didn't even know what it was. it was one of those, you go in the barn, its dark and next thing you know you're in pain. by the time i figured out it was rocky, i just stopped moving and he ran off. thankfully. but he did cut my legs THRU my jeans and i had massive bruises all over. i told her she needed to at least trim his spurs, she refused. then he attacked about 10 other people. our whole neighborhood was threatening an evening of fried chicken but then a coon came and killed him.

i hate that he died that way, but i wish my neighbor had listened and cut the spurs off when he started being aggressive.

anyway, i thank heaven my Elvis seems pretty good so far.

For me, it's very, very simple. My children come before EVERYTHING ELSE. If any animal harms one of them...it's gone. Dog, cat, chicken (I keep the kids away from all the horses except their mini) - doesn't matter. If it hurts them, it's gone.

Thank goodness I have great dogs and cats.

We had a pair of Delawares and the roo turned on my 2 year old daughter out of the blue. Got her twice and knocked her down. After a quick Q&A here (and Speckledhen's great point about the height of kids and standard roo's), he went to the chopping block (and was buried).

r all of these roos free range? i have two cockrels right now, one of which we show so he gets handled alot, the other used to free range, but because we got rid of all our adults i have'nt let them out, oh and the bobcat we saw trying to get into the coop, anyhoo, is it better, or make any differance in a cooped roo and a free range roo? the one cockrel(the one that stays home, and hardly ever gets handled) bows down with feathers flaring when we're outside the coop, but the second we make a move for the coop he runs and hides. also he sees us handle our pullets(who come right to us) i wonder if he knows that we're not there to hurt them, i wonder since he sees us being nice to our girls, if he can trust us? hmm, just a thought and a question

I think its time for you to look up some good chicken recipes!!

I know it sounds mean but that would be my choice.

Sorry you went through such a trajic experience as a child. :aww

Also glad that you understand that crowy was acting on his instincts, and didn't turn out hating roosters for life.

Thank you, and to add, I had other chickens and roos as pets. I have always loved the color combinations of breeds bred together.

my aggressive rooster was the first i ever killed for the stewpot. i didn't even know how, i just knew it had to be done. i dont' have kids. he did hurt the duck, though, and that was enough for me. i think it is the responsible, and tasty, thing to do.

there is nothing wrong with stopping something that is trying to hurt you or your children or your animals by whatever means are at hand. even a two by four. i have had a cut so deep on my leg before it required stiches and i still got a scar. this was from a rooster who would act like he was busy doing something else and when i turned my back even if it was twenty minutes later, would dash across the barnyard and literally jump me. if you have been attacked by a rooster, you would not think it is wrong. letting something hurt you or yours is ridiculous. a rooster who is overly aggressive can't be killed with kindness. it needs to be killed.

this is being said by someone who has a recliner she lets her goats sit in and who makes special treats for her chickens to eat. at the same time, the first time a billy goat even looked at me like he was going to but me, i sat right down on him. i'm fat, 250 pounds, so it was a long ride for that billy goat. and me, too, like sitting on a bucking bronco. but i never ever let go. because i knew if he thought he had the upper hand, it would be downhill from here on out. he has never, ever tried that again. and if he does, well, i've never made goat soup, but i imagine i could figure out how.

AMEN! That was too funny (but also made a good point). My rooster scenario was that of a cartoon. You know... the ones where the character feels like somthing is sneaking up behind him... he turns around and whatever is following him stops and looks innocent. Then, he turns back around and continues on his way... the next time he feels like something is behind him and turns around, it's a little bit closer.... then closer, then closer, then closer until WHAM!

LOL, reminds me of our crested runner duck, Kupo. He will sneak up when your back is turned, but if you turn and look at him, he's suddenly innocent too, looking at the sky and almost whistling. Turn away again and the neck snakes towards you and he's running in again, bill open for attack. Too funny.

Fortunately, ducks either can't do much damage or he's not at all serious. I think they just can't do any damage, because he sure takes HIMSELF seriously at times like these.

The worst he has done is body-slammed me. I almost can't feel him bite, really.

Now a roo ... that's another story. I hope mine don't become too aggressive. I was stalked as a child by two big white roos, and I used to plot their demise. Fortunately, they took my pocket-knife away because I think the roos would have won anyway, and I'd still be wearing scars.

I can't have a truly dangerous animal attacking humans. Just yesterday the gas man came and went on back there with all the animals roaming around ... I don't need a lawsuit.

My little guys now know who the boss is. I hope it stays that way. I want SOME payback for constantly running 50 yards to knock them off a pullet, just to make a point, LOL. They are also decidedly un-cuddly, and when I want to catch them, they are VERY good at keeping away from me. I think they'd rather have zero contact with humans. That's fine with me ... I can hope they will do their job and stay away from humans the rest of the time.
