I have been around chickens all of me life which means 70 years in June. As far as I know my great grandparents had chickens. They were not pets. They added food for the family. It seems strange to think of chickens as pets. Some breeds are more docile than others and within the breeds you will find some with more personality than others, but pets? I care for my flock and they are great layers but I can't say they are pets. I have several Rhode Island Reds hens, one rooster that was supposed to have been Black Copped Maran and five Black Copper Maran hens. All of the hens are social and the rooster isn't, which I prefer. He watches over for the hens. When a hawk goes over he is watching out for the hens and will take them to cover. He will face a dog and put them on the run. We have a lot of feral cats in our area and I haven't lost a hen yet. Their coop has an electric fence for night time roosting but through the day they are free range and I value the boss of the flock. He isn't friendly, and I do keep an eye on him when we are interacting with him. He doesn't have a name, nor does he walk up seeking my company but he is fed well and provided for.
