Hi,

Anyone got any ideas what's the best kind of Muscovy duck as a back garden pet to add to my flock of other critters?
Friendly, good egg layer are really the oly criteria.

cheers,

If your just looking for a pet then any strain of Muscovy should do fine. They all appear to be very friendly when raised as babies. As for egg laying I believe Scovies are a seasonal layer.

What do you mean by "type of Muscovy"? As far as I know, theres domestic and wild muscovy ducks. The domestic ones come in many colors, but there's only one "type". If you want one for a friendly pet, I would suggest getting them as young as possible and handling them daily so they get used to you.
Also, they do not lay very many eggs. They will only lay April-may through September-October. And if you let them set and hatch their own eggs, then you won't get as many from them. If you want a duck for eggs, I would suggest khaki Campbell's, welsh harlequins, or even pekins.
