pets and meals

I guess I am suprised that some of us have chickens for pets, and some have chickens for meat or the layers will end up meat, and there is no arguing. Comments?

I don't know why you would be surprised. We all know there are many reasons people have chickens.

And some of us have both, at the same time.

I think because most of us feel that so long as our birds are alive we take good care of them, love them (even if we don't pick them up and cuddle them*) and keep them healthy and safe.

That's the important part. Whether or not people choose to eat them when it's time for them to be food is up to them, it's how they take care of them in the meantime.

*I am of the pick them up and cuddle them variety, but my birds (with the exception of my silkie cuddle bug, who I want to keep in the house because he's a love and is an absolute pet, but my husband won't let me *pout*) are livestock. but they're livestock that are treated like pets.

Well, we are a diverse community and as most areas are in the US, we are mostly accepting of how other people choose to do things in their lives. So there are the avid pet chicken lovers, and some who 's living depends on having their birds productive. Then there are those in between who will love their birds as pets while others in the same flock are destined for food. I am one of those who can dote on a chick for 3 months to learn that it is a rooster and have to send it the way of the rooster because it is not reasonable to keep 30 girls and 30 boys at the same time.

No matter what the birds end up for, a loving pet or a lovely dinner, we can all agree that as long as we have given the birds the best life possible, we can all gather together and talk chickens!
