My 24 week old brown isa had started to lay eggs. What joy. I got 7 eggs so far and now - nothing. Sometimes I hear her "just laid an egg cackle" and I rush out, still nothing. I wonder if hens can have a phantom "pregnancy". There is no rooster. All I know about chickens I learned here. Any advise would be welcome.

When they first start laying, pullets have a lot of "misses." Someone said that it takes awhile for the plumbing to work right. That's about it.

I read that as many as 40% of the first ova are reabsorbed rather than continuing to develop into an egg. How this is known, I'm not sure.

The cackling is sometimes for other reasons than egg-laying. For instance, it may mean, "Someone is in my favorite nest box! Make her leave!"

Wow that was quick. Thank you for the reasurance that she is not egg bound. I still have 3 other ladies that you a bit younger and have not yet laid. So this particular brownie has not even a fave nest box. Just on the floor in front of the door! I put a big black planting tub at its side and put straw in it and 2 golf balls. The plastic eggs are on its way. She totally ignores it. Hope the other ones will be more choosy.
