Just a couple questions. First, I dont plan on crossing pheasant species. I changed a tire a couple weeks back and got paid with a melanistic ringneck cock. I am planning on crossing him with some chickens (polish, sumatra, leghorn, etc.) just to have funny free ranging birds.
The question is, since I wasnt able to get amherst hens this fall, could amherst cross with chickens? Also can any type of pheasant cross with a guinea? I did a short search online and couldnt find anything about pheasants crossing with guineas.

I have considered the pheasant being agressive but the hens I am putting with him are all more high strung like pheasant hens anyway. The plan is to put the hens in for a couple weeks then seperate them and just collect eggs from the hens for a couple weeks and repeat. I got lucky with my cock though, he is calmer than most of my roosters but I think it may be because he is 'defective' (he was scalped and had a broken wing heal weird) that I didnt notice til I got him home. He lets me walk out into the pen and pick him up.

I asked a couple friends about the other questions I had about the amherst x chicken and pheasant species x guineas, they said even with AI its only like 3% fertility rate for the amherst and no luck with guinea x pheasant

first off. your cock wont try to breed those hens. he prob. will be afraid of them and very "nutty" like most ringnecks. also pheasants and chickens are a DIFFERENT bird. they require different housing, feed, and also disease can CERTAINLY spread from chicken to pheasant and pheasant to chickens.... also i very much so doubt the hens will allow him to mount them either. and third off if it even ever was to happen(cock mounting a hen) im sure the anatomy from the pheasant tyring to breed the chicken would be next to impossible to "fertalize" her. most of those pics YOUR looking at are from A.I. and that to me and to MOST true breeders. is just screwing up everything that I and other breeders try to do. that is to keep the TRUE breed alive and to PREVENT any type of cross breeding for the better of the breed. if everyone keeps cross breeding we will NEVER be able to even get ahold of any PURE bred animals.... it's a very touchy subject in here and im suprised im the first one to get a bit flustered reading this...

yeah true, but how do you come up with a new breed than? by playing

Oh dear, I figured since it was crossing a pheasant to a chicken it wouldnt end up all nasty like the golden x amherst and other such topics. I am a purist when it comes to pheasants and chicken breeds but I have extra birds that wont be used in any other pens. My neighbor crossed her extra ringneck cock on barnyard variety hens and was able to hatch out quite a few chicks without doing AI, it was natural breeding in a basic pheasant pen. I wont be selling any of the hybrids, they will just be turned loose to free range.

I dont want to stir up anything around here, just was curious what other folks knew on the subject of pheasant x chicken hybrids.
