Pheasant pen

Hi I am building a ringnecked pheasant pen with a gabled roof. It will be 4 foot all the way up to 6 foot. What should I cover the top with? I have extra welded wire but I am worried that they will break their necks. Should I do a net of some sort, or stick with the welded wire?

I personally believe they should covered with something solid.I use metal roofing,it keeps their pen from getting soaked by rain and snow.

i use rat wire for mine with a little lento i use that for my exotics you want it about 12 feet high otherwise they don't have enough room to roost comfortably

I use 1" knotted netting to cover my pheasant run. This gives the birds a cushion when spooked and fly straight up. Attatch it only to the outside of your coop and prop it up in the center if need be with posts with old hub caps on top so the netting cannot snag on them when the pheasants hit the netting. The reason for the 1" netting is due to the fact that owls like to spook the pheasants just to make them fly. If the pheasants can get thier heads through the netting and get caught in it, the owl will grab it and eat as much as it can before dropping a headless bird back into your predator proof pen. Do not buy woven netting. Price difference is about the same but the knotted netting is alot sturdier if your area has alot of predators. A large raccoon can tear through the woven netting with no problems.

I have no faith in netting.It may be nice for a top,but coons can rip right thru it.Plus if it gets heavy snow on it,it will drop to the ground.It does pop back up when removed.I strongly believe in a solid roof to keep your pen floor dry.The smaller pen is covered with a construction poly and has been replaced with metal roofing.

Absolutely NOT!!! This netting is cheap but won't keep out predators. The extra money spent to keep your birds safe is worth every cent compared to losing half of your birds to a raccoon who wandered onto your property in the middle of the night. I had a raccoon visit my pheasant pen one night and had 1" braided netting on the sides and top. The raccoon had no problem ripping through this several times during the night, killing 7 roosters and 10 hens. Others escaped through the tears in the netting. I had to repair 8 holes in this netting before trying to recover the escaped birds. Caught 6 of them and put them back into my run but many others ran free. If you are willing to lose birds due to lack of money, then you might find yourself in the same situation that I had. I will try to find a link for you to purchase the netting that you need or suggest a web site so that you don't experience the same problems that I had. BRB.
