kids play sand contains small particles of glass and when ingested into a bird it can actually cause death...so the washed masonry sand is the best option

I used crushed river sand/sharp sand. Its not actually sharp its just quite large grained.

Would I be able to have a mixture of sand and something like top soil? Or could I do about 1/3-1/2 sand and the rest something like top soil?

If I were you I would do one or the other. Over time the denser of the two would sink to the bottom, so you may as well just put top soil down

dig 1 foot below on edges put a board there and pour oil around keeps out ll critters.Good choice with hight mine is a little taller amd wider.Remember to put in lots of habbitat
