Pheasant with wierd open wings?/ Gender

One of my pheasants wings is kind of opened. It looks like it could just be his feathers that are making it look like that, but I am a little worried. And also what age can you tell they are males? some have longer tail feathers than others. could those be males?
 
Are they just holding them out away from their bodies? I noticed I had a couple roosters doing this yesterday and thought it was weird, but then I realized they were just hot and thirsty.

Maybe a way to relieve excess heat? Like unzipping a jacket for us, perhaps?

I don't have pheasants, so I can't be for sure.
