Pheasants and Chickens

I'm not trying to discourage you, just want you to be successful in raising pheasants. They are very rewarding and at times down right frustrating. As far as profit, you'll be better off raising quail. Good Luck, where ever your endeavors take you!

Okay... In this case I will go with quail. Pheasant are expensive in my area and although they'd be good profit, I don't want to risk losing a bunch of time or money.

I wasn't sure- whatever was available, really. Out here it is very hard to find game birds or exotic birds. Thus why I was focusing on that niche market of game birds (quail or pheasants)- they are in high demand here.

Yeah, I lost a couple in Hurricane Harvey. (hypothermia) stayed out in the rain until their feathers were totally soaked. A friend of mine in Rockport, lost all of his....actually, I lost more because I gave him 22 of of mine (pairs and trios). Some I could have sold for $300/pr.

Yeah, in less than 2 days I lost over 20 purebred Wyandotte chicks ($200) and 20 quail RIGHT at the point of lay (I was so mad! I had waited impatiently for those tiny little eggs) ($100).

I know that feeling all too well. Raccoons are my problem. Coyotes, foxes just walk right by my pens but coons fond a way to get them, eventhough, my pens are like Ft
Knox.

Up here we don't have coons, thankfully, and I haven't had a fox since. My best defense has been getting rid of problem animals and letting newer, warier ones move in, leaving them be. My dog also regularly comes to the coops with me and I believe that has helped.

Yep, a big dog is the best deterrent. When I had Great Danes and Weimaraners never had a problem. Now, I have a Jack Russell, who's braver than Dick Tracy but not big enough...he took on a coon one night (coon was way bigger) and I had to take him to the vet. I've had them pull 1/2" fence staples out of treated lumber and 1" welded wire mesh and get into my pens. I absolutely hate coons.
