My 10 year daughter informed me of the death of one of our gorgeous hens...

The trouble is, I have no idea why this one died. I have a hen who has developed slower than the other chickens, whose comb and wattle is not as red as the others. Once in a while this one lies around while the others are active, so I thought this would be the chicken, if anyone died, to go first. But one of the beautiful, large sweet hens is dead. I see no markings or injuries to the chicken. I did have a chicken which sneezed from time to time. SO, could she have suddenly died from the resp virus that I have read about? Or, they have been munching on my rhubarb plant. Could the little that they have eaten from this plant have caused her death? She is not the only one who had eaten from it. I don't know what else to investigate or think about in regards to a cause. Do any of you have a mental 'list' that you run over when one of your hens passes that might help me out? I appreciate your help!

Had 5, now 4 Buff Orpingtons in a playhouse coop. We let them range for 1-2 hours supervised once or twice a day. Clean water, plenty of food, clean coop. They are 5 months old, have not produced any eggs yet. Thank you!

Thank you for your response. My chicken was only 5 months old, but they hadn't started laying eggs yet. I checked for mites or any sign of illness on the other chickens and my roo, but there is nothing remarkable.

Wish I knew what happened!
