Sunshine Flock
Crowing
When I joined BYC some months back, I posted a discussion about my rooster who had just been attacked by a coyote. I was hoping to find an archive of photos I could browse of other people's chickens that had been attacked by predators.
As time rolled along and I learned more and more about caring for injured and ill chickens, through experience and also from browsing the forums every day, I was always looking for photos to accompany the discussions. Not everyone with an emergency posts photos. I didn't post any of my rooster for three weeks.
But photos are really helpful. They enable others to provide better informed feedback, and they're also a great resource for those of us researching specific problems. Poop (still can't stand that word!) photos abound, scattered throughout the forums, and some chicken bloggers have created poop charts to help people differentiate between normal, possibly a problem, and definitely a problem poop.
I'd sure like to find an easy to access archive, though, of photos right here on BYC.
In the Gallery section, I see five categories, none that refer to emergencies. I'm not sure how this could be accomplished, and maybe it's an impossible task, but is there a way to add the ability to tag photos when members upload them? First a broad category would need to be selected, based on discussion forum categories (i.e. emergencies); then a selection of tags specific to the kinds of problems and photos you'd find in the broader category (i.e. poop, predator attack, wry neck, bumble foot, etc.).
This would be incredibly helpful and a resource that could be posted as links when someone is trying to help members in the various forums, but especially the emergencies forum. It'd be great for chicken coop construction, feeders and waterers, hot wire and other popular topics as well.
I know we can add tags to discussions we start, but we can't do that with uploaded photos. Tagging discussions is helpful when we search the forums, but there's a goldmine of photos we can't directly access. Or can we and I somehow overlooked it? I'm really good at doing that!!
ETA: The first tag for the primary category (i.e. emergencies) should be automated; not selected.
