I don't expect anyone remembers, but 3 months ago I thought I'd try raising a few chickens. I was thinking between 3-6, after I got a coop of some kind. Then my daughter & I stopped one day at the feed store - SHE was shopping for a barrel for her pigs. My Grandson (age 3) and I were walking around looking - Oh look! chickie babies. Feed store guy comes over and tells me he's expecting a new shipment of day-olds the next day and the existing ones (2 weeks old - poor old things), had to go. I could have them for $1. if I took them all and he'd throw in a sack of chick starter. 6 of them were the breed I wanted, Wyandottes, the rest were not, but oh well. I ended up with 3 Silver & 3 Gold Laced Wyandottes, 5 California Whites and 6 Brown Leghorns. Yep - 17 chicks and no coop. But a huge ice chest worked for a while.
They grow up so fast! And it is so hot here. Hovering around 100 the last couple weeks.
Here's a California and 2 Brown Leghorns enjoying the fan Mom gave them. I love the feathers standing on end.
